“Rumbling Volcano”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 27, 2013

On the day we went the Volcano this was active and the trails were closed. There was not much to see at the volcano except smoke emerging from the ominous crater. The drive up was nice, the higher the elevation the more barren the landscape became. I was impressed with the safety at the top parking lot as they have everyone park their vehicles backed in, just in case you have to leave in a hurry. Their museum below was one of the few places I found post cards, which I thought were rather over priced. I later mailed and to date none ever arrived. I found the museum more interesting with a very nice view.

“Excellent hiking at the top”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 16, 2013

It's a gorgeous area on top of the volcano if the weather is good; it's also cooler than in Granada. There are three hikes to take. One is very easy, and requires no guide. The second takes about 1 1/2- 2 hours, and requires a guide. I recommend this one, because the views are best, and the guide explains things about the flora and fauna, and shows you things you'd otherwise not see; there are some minor strenuous parts, but they are not hard unless you have young children or are very old. The third hike we did not do, but apparently it is much more strenuous, and you don't get all of the views in as the more moderate one; it requires a guide as well. You have to stop at the bottom and pay to get in, then take their SUV/trucks up to a nice visitor center. The ride up is on a steep paved road, but not in exactly luxurious conditions; it could be a bit harrowing if you aren't in the proper frame of mind, but did not seem dangerous. I think one could also hike but it would likely be an entire day I would guess; save the hiking for the top as that is where the good views are.
If the weather isn't good, you likely won't get any views at all. It seemed like in the Summer, the earlier times had a better chance of not clouding up.

“Awesome experience!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 12, 2013

The hike around the crater trail is easy and it offers a great view of the crater and Granada. this was my first time in a cloud forest and it was truly amazing. I enjoy seeing and feeling the volcano's fumaroles. I recommend going with a guide that knows the fauna/flora of the volcano well in order to get more out of the hike. I recommend going with Tierra Tours. The station on top of the volcano has a cafeteria in which you can get food. You place the order before hiking and when you are done walking the food will be ready for you, which is amazing. If you do not want real food, the station also has some snacks available. Even on cloudy days the experience is incredible as you will be surrounded by clouds while you hike around the volcano, just make sure to bring your rain jacket.

“Amazing flora and fauna”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 12, 2013

Perfect afternoon spent on Mombacho. First with a tour of the coffee farm, Finca El Progreso, then up to the trails. We saw so much plant life and even saw a sloth! Such a cool place, and yet still so pristine.

“Cool and interesting”

It's a relatively easy volcano to hike and it's usually cool up there. The view can be good if there aren't any clouds.
