We went with a tour company called Mombotour, adjacent to the zocalo in Grenada. In the morning the summit was covered in clouds, but we went anyway. They picked us up at our room (near the zocalo) and took us up the mountain to the Cafe Las Flores coffee plantation. We did a zip line tour, had lunch and too much coffee, then did a 4 hour hike on a volcano trail called the 10,000 steps (or something about a bunch of steps). At the days end we rode back into Grenada with the guides where they dropped us at the grocery store. Our guide was passionate and very knowledgable naming all the flora, and fauna, as well as historical bits. We got all this for less than $160US for both of us.
We got lucky and the clouds blew away from the peaks when we were on top. The geologic activity was amazing when we could see through the vegetation. The coffee was delicious too! On the way back to town we noticed the summit had again fogged in.

We had a great time on Mombacho - take the puma trail if you are fit, as it is lush and full of life. You can also combine the senduro trail with the puma. When we arrived at the top via transport vehicle, we couldn't see an inch in front of us, but after we began the clouds cleared away and we had some beautiful views. By the way, I am 65 and my husband is 59, so this is not just for the young. Don't miss this mountain if you like to hike.

This was our first visit to the rim of the Volcano and it was nothing like we expected. There is frequently a cloud sitting atop Mombacho and as a result, it is like a rain forest at the top. We only went to two viewing platforms, as there is a fair amount of climbing up and down steps, but it was beautiful, lush and full of moisture. The "Tunnel" was amazing. We had arranged to have lunch back at the Las Flores Coffee Plantation, and it was delicious. To hike the entire rim is strenuous.

Take care if going to Mombacho independently. My husband and I visited using local transport i.e. bus from Granada to the turn off the highway and took a rickshaw to the lower ranger station from where you are accompanied by park rangers however on the way down we decided to walk the final kilometer to the highway from the lower ranger station, as it was 4.45 in the evening and there were several people around, When we were only about 50 meters from the highway when five youths appeared one put a gun to my husbands head and two had large knives at my side. One youth took my husbands backpack from his back and another cut my small bag off me with the knife and then they ran off.. Chased by other people who were behind us. It all happened very quickly!! So if you do decide to make this trip independently make sure to take the rickshaw back down as well!!

i liked it a lot because it has a high peak. it also has a nice environment. there you can see different kind of species and plants. One of the famous animal you can see is the guarda barranco(motmot) that is the national bird in Nicaragua.
