We arrived without a reservation and we were lucky we went after one of the busies week of the year. We found great rooms at an also great price ($89 per double occupancy with queen size beds).
The rooms where next to the pool. The kids loved it. My wife and mother in law also loved the hotel. We will definitely stay there next time we visit Nicaragua.

We stayed in the Plaza Colon during February and caught the last night of Poetry Week. The kids had a hotel room on the main floor poolside and they raved about the maids. The maids kept all their clothes tidy and in the words of a fifteen year old were absolutely amazing! We (the parents) got a room with balconey overlooking the plaza. Every night we would play a round of cards and watch the square go to sleep. Then in the morning it would come to life again. We are very privileged to stay in hotel like that when you see how some of the vendors on the square struggled to make a life for their families. The location was very central but then Granada is not a large city. The front desk staff were very helpful, notably Carlos who went out of his way to make sure we were comfortable and had everything we needed and behind the scene Maria who arranged our booking. The only thing I should have asked for was more chairs for the balconey, as it was we "borrowed" from the room next to us! The pool was also a big hit. Although not large it was nice to take a refreshing dip after a day of touring. I wouldn't hesitate to stay there again.

  • Liked — balcony, pool and location
  • Disliked — no corkscrew but wine in the bar fridge!

I stayed at the Hotel Plaza Colon in late December 2007. It is a beautiful hotel located in an old-style colonial structure with rooms located on two floors. (The hotel's website has plenty of pictures that give you an accurate view of what it looks like.) The hotel is located directly in front of Granada's Central Park, on the opposite side from the Cathedral. The hotel is kept immaculately clean, with wood beams and columns, wood and tile floors, and open-air central patios. The rooms are spacious with polished wood floors, air-
conditioning, ceiling fans, cable TV and modern bathrooms. Some of the rooms on the second floor have large terraces overlooking the park and the line of horse-drawn carriages that are ready to take you away for a unique tour of the city. Breakfast was included in the room rate and consisted of a typical Nicaraguan plate of eggs, rice and beans, cheese and coffee. The breakfast is served at a small cafe that is on one side of the hotel, but there are tables and chairs around the patios where you can sit and eat at your leisure. There is also a small but lovely pool for those wishing to take advantage of it.

The best aspect of Hotel Plaza Colon, however, is the staff. Everyone without exception was friendly and attentive. Everyone seemed willing to go above and beyond to ensure an enjoyable stay for the guests. As an example, I asked at the reception about changing money into the local currency and one of the porters offered to walk me the two or so blocks to a place where I could change money. If the staff sees you carrying a bag, they will rush to take it from you so as to take it to your room. That's what I call exceptional service. And the staff at the cafe serving breakfast were also exceptionally polite.

I would not hesitate to stay at the Plaza Colon the next time I'm in Granada. Thanks to everyone there.

My apologies in advance for being a bit long-winded. My wife and stayed at Hotel Plaza Colon January 21-24, 2008. This is a very clean, well run hotel in the middle of Granada on the western side of Plaza Colon. My wife and I actually switched over to this hotel from Hotel La Gran Francia as HLGF was having a hot-water problem (no discredit to that fine establishment). We were not disappointed with HPC. Our room was spacious and comfortable. We stayed in room #210, a second floor room with a balcony overlooking a side street. While the view from the balcony wasn’t of the plaza and really wasn’t much of a view at all, the big double doors that let onto the balcony let in a lot of light. The bed was king sized and comfortable and the bathroom was large. The shower did put out hot water after letting it run for about a minute. The room also had a tile floor, a ceiling fan and air-conditioning, a mini-bar refrigerator, a writing desk and chair and a spacious closet. The lighting was decent as well. For what it’s worth, the television came with cable and had a large selection of channels to choose from. The room could be entered from a large wrap-around balcony that led to all the other second floor rooms and overlooked the pleasant courtyard with a pool and many plants.

The hotel had a nice front porch where one could sit and enjoy a cocktail or a meal. We had a package that included breakfast daily. The breakfast was the same each day: gallo pinto (rice and beans), two pieces of bread with butter and jelly, one or two eggs cooked to order, a slice of the local cheese and plenty of good coffee served either black or café con leche. There was a drink special every day we were there; two for one priced at USD 2.50. Of course, that meant two for one for each person, and not just two drinks you could split for the price of one.

If you sit out on the porch, bear in mind you will be approached by kids and adults peddling handicrafts, asking for money or asking for food. The handicrafts were items such as little painted clay whistles shaped like birds, locally made pottery, necklaces, etc. As for the kids and adults asking for money or food, you need to do what your heart tells you is right. We bought some wholesome snacks at the local Supermercado Pali to hand out when kids asked us for money. For the most part, the children were very grateful. Even better would be to donate some money or supplies to Carita Feliz, an organization in Granada that tries to feed as many kids as possible on a daily basis.

The staff at the hotel were very friendly and helpful. I speak fluent Spanish, so I can’t say how it would be for someone who doesn’t know the language, but as far as I could tell, everyone on staff had a decent knowledge of English. One example of the helpful staff: my wife and I had purchased a whole melon at the local market, but didn’t have anything to cut it with. I called the reception desk just to ask for a knife and not a minute later, one of the staff was at our door with two plates, forks, napkins and a foot long carving knife. They really aim to please.

Overall, we were very pleased with our stay at Hotel Plaza Colon. It is very nicely located near banks, stores, restaurants and the pleasant plaza. Everyone was friendly and courteous and seemed glad we were there. One of the rooms with a balcony overlooking the plaza would likely be very nice to get even though I imagine they would pick up a bit more noise from the plaza and the morning sunlight would be very intense. The view would be great, though!

  • Liked — A large, clean, spacious room that was a pleasure to sleep in.
  • Disliked — Nothing; the hotel did everything right.

The hotel is only a year old, and there isn't much beyond "perfect" that can describe it. The pool was fantastic, and the staff is overly gracious and accomodating. There are certainly cheaper places in Granada, but you'll be missing out on warm water, TV, AC, cozy beds with soft sheets, and a cannot-be-beat location.

We stayed here 12/28/07-12/30/07. This was a great hotel in Granada - excellent location overlooking central plaza and cathedral. We booked a room overlooking the plaza and we could sit outside in the evening watching the comings and goings of everyone in plaza area. Room was large and comfortable but bathroom and shower small which was no big deal for 2 nights we stayed there. The pool area was nice - our kids swam in pool in afternoon. Staff very attentive and most spoke good English. They made phone calls for us to Oro Travel (also excellent) who we used for our tours. Overall we would highly recommend this hotel for a stay in Granada.
