“Ishmael made it fun and interesting for our group”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 12, 2013

We had a group of primarily college kids. Ishmael did a great job of involving everybody in the class and keeping it interesting and moving. Everybody learned a lot and had fun. Overall an hour well-spent - just be aware that, if you take the class late in the day, you will have to come back the next day to pick up your chocolate.

“Really fun & educational”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 12, 2013

I did this with my wife and we both loved it! Ishmael is your teacher and he's a really nice guy whose positive energy is infectious.

You start by learning about the process, fermentation, beans, etc. Then you roast beans over a fire. They pop like popcorn! Crazy, I never knew! You peel back the husks and grind the beans into paste. The whole time Ishmael is teaching you about the process and history. With the paste made, you make 3 drinks (Maya, Aztec & European), learn their recipes and drink them. Lastly you make a chocolate bar and get to customize your ingredients in your bar. Ishmael quizzes you on what you learn, you get a certification that you made chocolate and the bars are put in a freezer. You come back 2 hours later to pick up your bars.

This is a fun activity. I'm guessing kids would LOVE to do this. It was only my wife and I in our class and when we went to pick up our bars, Ishmael was teaching 2 people. So you have small class sizes. For $19 a person, I would say it's worth it. Plus the bars we made are delicious! :)

“decent tour but horrible chocolate”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 11, 2013

we bought a bunch of chocolate to bring home to friends only to discover it was all horrible. appears to have melted or something but the consistency is grainy and unpleasant. at $3.75 USD per small bar this is twice as much as many chocolate bars at home and more than any of the Swiss chocolate for horrendous quality. so now no gifts for all our friends and over $35 wasted.

“Class with Ishmael was great”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 10, 2013

Our group of 4 (ranging in age from 12-50) had a wonderful time in the interactive chocolate class with Ishmael. He's a fabulous and fun instructor, very passionate and knowledgable about chocolate. We all love dark chocolate and we found it to be well worth the time and cost. Take time to walk thru the hotel, it's lovely and the staff is very friendly.
You will need to plan to pick-up the chocolate bar that you make in the class a couple hours later after it has cooled.
My only suggestion is that they add the Aztec chocolate drink to the menu of drinks that you can order in the cafe.
