“Delightful View, Delightful Meal, Delightful Adventure...”
Reviewed March 2, 2014

The view of Lake Nicaragua is stunning from this restaurant right on the water. The food was another wonderful example of fresh Nicaraguan fare. However, the most enjoyable part of our time at Villas Mombacho was the unexpected rain fall that cooled the day and made for an exciting adventure. It isn't supposed to rain in February. However, rain it did. First the temperature dropped and then the rain came almost sideways under the thatched covers and into our table area!!! The restaurant staff moved the table further in and then got all of us (table of women) clean table cloths to wrap around us and attempt to keep us dry. The rain ended fairly quickly and we enjoyed a lovely meal complete with an exciting story to tell. Grateful to the staff to accommodate our needs.

“Nice views, breezes & fresh fish”
Reviewed January 7, 2014

We were guided to this place by the hotel owner where we were staying in Granada. She said that it was a great place to take a boat tour to the isletas and have lunch. And she was right on the money. The relaxing boat tour was $20.00 for up to 10 persons per boat and we had a nice lunch afterwards. Our tables were placed just by the lake on a sandy promenade. Very nice setting.

Most of us in our large party had the guapote, a lake local fish, which was delicious, well prepared. Don't miss it! But the shrimp and pasta were also acceptable. Don't expect sophisticated cuisine though. This place is a place for typical Nicaraguan style seafood.

We also had a prompt and friendly service. Overall, we had a very nice experience, were delighted by the views and the breezes from the lake in this rustic and charming place. Will definitely recommend it. You will need to drive or take a taxi.

“A hit on multiple levels”
Reviewed December 31, 2013

Villas Mombacho is one of those places you just don't find many places, which in itself is attraction. And that's before you get to the personal fish.

The place: Though there are accommodations, too (cabins that look quite appealing), the main attraction seems to be the restaurant. It sort of ... snakes along the lakeshore for a long stretch so that virtually every diner is lakeside even though it's quite large; some tables are even situated alone or with only 2-3 others on points jutting into the water. Delightful.

The food: I've eaten here twice and never gotten past the guapote - a whole fried fish farmed on the property that, yes, has bones but is prepared in such a way that you can just lift the meat out. One of our party isn't a big fish eater and is pretty averse to anything that arrives still looking like what it once was, but even he couldn't get enough of it. (He ate all of his and then tried to wrestle some of mine away.) Each of us had the "personal" guapote because nobody wanted to share, but they come in multiple sizes. The sides aren't anything to write home about but adequate. The service was prompt and attentive. The Margaritas are quite good. The price of a fish and drink came to about $15/person. Tip is not included.

The location: Because of the beautiful lake setting, I'd strongly recommend going for a daytime meal, not an evening one when you won't be able to see anything. This is out of town and not walkable so, if you don't have a vehicle, you'll need a taxi. You might try calling the restaurant and asking if they'll send one. When we went, it was $10 from town but only $5 going back when they called the cab.

If you're coming during the day, leave yourself time for a boat ride arranged by the restaurant! The hour-long tour of the islettas was $20 for just our party - a huge bargain over what the marinas nearby are charging to take you out with a big group. And the islettas are well worth seeing - a sprinkling of volcanic debris that has been variously developed (or not) into homes for the locals, hotels or nothing at all. If you ask for a launch as you sit down at lunch, you might be able to time its arrival with your bill's arrival.

Given all this - the setting, the personal fish, the bonus boat ride - it's awfully hard to find a reason not to visit once and go back again.

“Lovely location, but food too expensive”
Reviewed December 19, 2013

This place is ideally located on Lake Nicaragua, and makes for a great spot to relax, eat and drink, and to get out the city for a while.

The food, however, is very expensive (I think each main meal is more than 300 Cordobas), and this is sadly not matched by the quality. I have eaten there three times, and only once did I think the food was anything worthwhile. I don't mind paying over the odds if it is really worth it, but I would rather go and sit at a little restaurant on Laguna de Apoyo and pay half the price for better quality.

If the prices were to drop however, I would be a regular!

“Birthday celebration”
Reviewed November 16, 2013 via mobile

The whole big family went to Granada to celebrate my grandmas 80th birthday. First if all the place is nice, but very bad services. Its seems like they are not prepared for big crowds. Very slow services. I ordered the fried fish, first the fish was tasteless and they barely give you any food, its embarrassing to bring anyone to a place like that. I feel that something was off because many people in our party got sick (I think the fish was not fresh). I highly dont encourage anyone to as pend their money nor risk getting sick.
