I can't understand the other bad reviews and found the owners to be very helpful. Some people want $300 accomadation fo $10 and get angry when they don't get the bargain of the century.

I have been really surprised reading the reports about the owners' aggression on this site- I saw no evidence of that.
I liked the service and the atmosphere; the location and the small pool; the lush garden setting and the breakfast was good too.
However, my room... though charming, had quite a gubby bathroom, and something was coming in daily and doing droppings on the floor in there. I know it was every day as I washed them down the drain myself with the shower. I had strted my stay at Lonely Beach at P&Ricos, who offer VERY clean rooms (without mosquito protection of any kind though) for 200baht a night. i moved due to the intolerable disco noise that came from across the street.
Orchid was 600baht a night, and i thought the room ok, but like I say; grubby.

During a month long trip my two hours spend at this hotel was the absolute lowlight. We emailed ahead to reserve a delux cabin for 3 which was not provided on our arrival. The owner was unavailable and being tired from a long journey we looked elsewhere. On returning to collect our things the owner was back and rather then acting in a professional manner and discussing the issue he became extremely aggresive - shouting, swearing etc. Much of this was in Dutch and his wife was joining in in Thai which did not help our attempts to communicate calmly with them and certainly complicates the situation when you don't know what is being shouted at you. He then stopped us from leaving by telling our taxi driver that we had stayed and not paid them. The driver was intimidated by him so wouldn't take us. The owner then stole one of our bags and would not allow us to leave. To cut a long story short we ended up paying for 3 nights just to be able to leave the place.

I have never come across such incompetent hotel management or such a volatile temper. His parting shot to us (whilst being physically restrained) was that if he found us he would kills us. Please think twice about giving your money to a man who can behave in such a threatening way to three young women. All we wanted was suitable accommodation and friendly place to stay. Simple really!

Don't be fooled by the clever photography on their website: the Orchid 'Resort' is tiny, the 'delux' bungalows are very small with minimal space and amenities, and the pool is a postage stamp of water you would have to be the size of a river-boatman to appreciate. The flowers are pretty but the location is rubbish and the staff are generally pretty slow.
Most important of all thought is the absolutely appauling behaviour of the Dutch owner. He is known to be bad tempered and aggressive amoung residents in the area -something we only found out about when we tried to leave early. It result in a physical and verbal attack which utterly ruined our planned 6 night stay on Koh Chang. We felt so unsafe there we had to leave after two days. Please don't give this horrible man any business!

If you're looking at this place you're probably looking at a midrange place, maybe hoping to find something a little special. This place is not it.

A list of positives and negatives about the resort:

Positive - clean rooms, good breakfast (a cooked breakfast is not what you're imagining if you're from nz/australia etc, it's much less exciting), a real coffee machine (which is the owners pride and joy and the only real attraction in my view).

Negative - no beach, beach view rooms have a very average view (mostly consisting of some non-resort shacks below the resort), no decent nearby beach, rude management, indifferent staff.

The resort itself is just an average sort of a place that you wouldn't really complain about but it is over-priced for what you're getting, and the owners/staff can be terrible. The "beach" is just a tiny we patch of sand about a 50-100m walk away from all except the beach front bungalows.

We stayed on Ko Chang for the last 4 nights of our trip to thailand. We had been travelling for 2 weeks and visited Ko Yao Noi, Ko Ngai (Ko Hai) and Bangkok. We booked this resort from bangkok about 24 hours before our arrival on Ko Chang, initially for 3 nights. I then sent a further email to ask if it could be changed to four nights within 12 hours of our arrival. When we arrived on ko chang we were generally disappointed with the place and the incredible over-development that has taken place.

The condensed version of this story is that I requested to check out early as we wanted to move to the east coast of the islad which is much more beautiful and above all quiet. The owner's wife who is a thai lady took GREAT offense and told me it wasn't possible, it was my problem, and the only way I was getting my passport back (which I'd stupidly given as a guarantee was if I paid out the rest of the booking. I figured that since we'd booked a very late notice we might be able to come to an agreement, but this was not possible. After this disagreement all the staff treated us as though we weren't there.

Not only did we end up having to pay out our booking before we left to go elsewhere, we also had to suffer the guilts the owners put on. It was so unprofessional and awkward that we paid and left the place early the next morning.

We stayed here in Dec 2008 for 5 nights. Although the resort is lovely to look at with orchids, huts, pool and sitting areas. The staff leave a lot to be desired. After travelling through Thailand staying in many budget guesthouses from Chiang Mai to Bangkok where the people and hospitality were wonderful, we found the Orchid second rate. The owner said they only cleaned rooms every 3 days unless we specifically asked them to do it. I fully support the environmentally friendly places that don't wash sheets every day but your room should be made up and bins emptied daily at their prices. There was no literature in the room stating how they operate. The restaurant was expensive but there are many good restuarants close by.

Lovely place !!!

Absolutely lovely place in a relaxed and lush orchid garden setting, the owner is very helpful and nice, he took us to a great beach every day for free, food is good and the bungalows are simple but clean-if you are looking for a relaxed vacation this is the place to be ! if you want more action loneley beach is just a few minutes on the scooter (drive carefully, the road is tricky)
