I recently stayed at this resort with my boyfriend for 3 nights. Although this time we didn't travel with our kids, we are both parents of small kids, and at the age where we prefer to relax and unwind rather than hit the clubs all night. Kae Bae was the perfect beach, and this was the perfect hotel for that.
We stayed in a Garden Bungalow, I think #2, which is right on the sand. The downside is that you need to keep your curtains closed for privacy when you are home, because people are walking right in front of your cabin. This didn't bother us. It came with a great little deck, and we would walk to 7-11 every night for a few beers, and drink them on our porch watching the subset. Buy mosquito coils and repellent while you're at 7-11, and this is great!
The biggest downside to to whole beachfront thing is the wild dogs that prowl the area, especially at night. Which means you can't really sit on the sand in peace. A few dogs are nice. The black one is nasty. If you bring kids, PLEASE read the signs, and do not feed or play with the dogs. I can't understand why I saw parents every single day allowing their kids to play with these feral dogs. I also saw 3 people get attacked or lurched at in 3 days. Don't let it be a child!
The room is perfectly nice, everything as expected from the photos. As in ALL tropical areas, especially beachside, ants are a problem if you have food in your room. Be clean and careful, and I didn't find them to be a problem. It's thailand, that's just how it is.
The tv had some tricky aspects, but it was really nice to have. There's about 300 channels, no joke. Somewhere way up high in the 260's or so is an English language movie channel. Nice way to pass the evenings after we finished with beers and dogs.
Breakfast is standard "good" for Thailand. I don't think I've ever had an amazing breakfast in Thailand, per western standards. But there's plenty of selection, and coffee. It was just fine. And the location for breakfast is beautiful, very pleasant. A jungle gym is right next to it. This is a great resort for kids, particularly if they are semi-independent, like 8 yrs plus. Very small and safe for them to wander briefly while parents have a coffee.
The hotel has a beachfront restaurant. Like all hotel restaurants, especially with a view, the food is so-so for the price. There is a seafood restaurant near 7-11 that is wonderful!
There was a pool but I didn't use it. It's back by the air-con units.
Staff was helpful. A few spoke decent English. But ko Chang is out of the way, don't expect the same amount of English or service as bigger cities. We had a problem with our lock once and they rushed to fix it, quickly and with a smile, even though the fix was a pain for them.
Some reviewers complained of the rocky beach. It didn't bother us. We snorkeled a little right off the beach, there are some fish, but nothing exciting. You can however rent a kayak and go to the little island off the coast for some decent snorkeling. Fun adventure!
All in all, I loved ko Chang. A little hard to get to for only 3 days. Next time I will make it 5 days to be more worth the travel time. But I will come back to this resort with my kiddo FOR SURE, he will love it. Plus, I didn't notice any prostitutes in Kai Bae- but I saw plenty of them in other areas. Good thing to look out for with kids....
