“Great place to stay on Koh Chang...”
Reviewed January 27, 2013

I arrived really late at night without a booking, and it was really full, but Shaun (the owner) managed to move some stuff around and get me and some other people rooms for the night. I had intended to go to a different island the next day but ended up staying for my whole trip. I got my Padi open water course with Shauns dive company Scuba Dawgs, which was amazing.

I stayed in the basic accomodation, which was pretty basic, but for the price was perfect for me. The huts were on a cliff/hill amidst the trees and looked over the sea. You can snorkel in the bay and swim off the rocks. They have aircon rooms with toilets too for the more luxurious traveller!

The basic rooms were simple huts, with balconies, chairs, good mosquito nets and fans, a double bed and cover, electricity and lights inside and on the balcony. You can even pick up wifi from some of the rooms. Beds and pillows were comfortable.

Shaun and the staff were all really helpful, and anything you need to do on the island, they can sort out for you, diving, snorkelling, treks, taxis, motorbikes.....you name it. They can also book you travel to go to wherever you are going next, so you are well looked after!

The food was really good, and the communal area was great. Its a huge decking overlooking the bay with a roof and just had a nice feel to it, lots of comfy seats and hammocks. It was pretty chilled out but also pretty social, and I met loads of people.

The walk into Bang Bao takes about 5 to 10 minutes, and there are places to eat, and loads shops up the pier.

I have just read one of the bad reviews on here by a gfirl from Amsterdam, and having stayed here I can say that almost every word of it is ridiculous! The walk to bang bao takes no more than 10 minutes, there are some very chilled out dogs by some houses with friendly local people. Its a bit dark, but I found it a really nice walk, and you could only think it very unsafe if you are very paranoid. Many girls who I met walked into Bang Bao every night and had no problem whatsoever, and enjoyed the peaceful walk like I did!

Shaun was very straight forward and honest, and helped me and everyone else I met in every way possible.

So to sum it all up, I would highly reccomend it as a chilled out place to stay, but close enough to the more lively places to come and go when you want.

I could have stayed a lot longer, but you have to move on at some point!

Enjoy :)

We stayed at Cliff Cottages because it was going to make things easier for our dive trips with ScubaDawgs. It has a great location only a 10minute walk to Bang Bao, although the path is a little Thaistyle and a touch muddy in the monsoon. You can't blame Cliff Cottage for any of that.
The concrete bungalows have aircon and a fantastic view of the bay, the more rustic bungalows on the hill, look out to sea.

I spent lots of time in the hammocks in the restaurant, the food and drink keep coming, the Thai staff are great and friendly, Shaun the owner is an awesome character who will do what ever he can to help. We will be back.

For those with soft feet, be careful going for a swim in the ocean, the rocks can be sharp.

We visited Koh Chang to do some diving - once we had arranged the dives with a great local company - ScubaDawgs, we also discovered the Cliff Cottage! - Great place to stay! if you get the dives booked in, the boat boys will pick you up in the morning on one of the companies smaller boats and take you to the dive boat, and bring you back to the cottages after the dives! Once back at the cottages - you get what you pay for! Clean comfortable en-suite rooms with fan and air-con, or basic huts with outside facilities, there is pleanty of Thai-style happening at this resort! Shaun the owner went out of his way to be helpful in various ways, - with local knowledge that he was keen to share. Great open restaurant/bar/chill-out area, with a fantastic atmosphere which provides the perfect opportunity to sit with a cold one, meet new people and watch the world go by! Snorkel gear, scooter hire and canoes are all available for a fee, the neighbouring hotel has a pool which we often nipped down to - no charge! We had a beautiful view of Bang Bao from our room, fresh towels daily - a corner of paradise!!

Both the cliff top cottages and the restaurant are situated fantastically. First prize for that.
The food in the restaurant is good, and the village can easily be reached on food in about 10 minutes.
Unfortunately the place was a bit too rambling for me. The wooden deck in the restaurant went up and down when even the dog was passing, this gave me an uncomfortable feeling.
The cottages were really basic. The door could not open without lifting it up a bit, the roof had some holes, as had the mosquito net, and the whole structure was not level. I found it difficult to sleep in such an un-level bed. No lock or towel was provided, anyway the cottage had no bathroom. For the bathroom you had to go down the steps over a partly muddy trail (leaking watertank next to the path) to find 3 toilets and 3 showers designed to be used by everybody (that is all the people in the cottages, all the people in the restaurant and all the staff). Considering all this, 400 bath for the cottage is expensive.
Nevertheless, I can recommend this place for its fantastic location. And who knows, maybe the vibes will be good for you (but they were not for me).

Found this place by chance having returned to Ko Chang for the first time in 15 years. Shaun the owner is a great guy and both him and his staff were very helpful, friendly and knowledgable. Rooms were great, I stayed in a basic hut which had amazing views at sunrise and sunset. There are also aircon rooms which are great value for the location compared to other guesthouses in the area.

Bang Bao village is within easy walk to a 7-11, pharmacy and lots of restaurants.

Cliff Cottage also runs 'Scuba Dawgs', a dive school with very friendly and knowledgable local and international diving staff. Great diving and snorkelling packages here with the cheapest prices for open water dive courses on the island. The boat and diving gear are all new and instructors very friendly and knowledgable. As a qualified diver I would highly recommend them to new and experienced divers alike.

A great place will definitely be back and recommend to others!!
