Lantaka Hotel
Ranked #5 of 5 Hotels in Zamboanga City

This hotel is a mixture of the traditional and the modern and both aspects show important reflections of themselves without compromising the other. It honestly reflects the city of Zamboanga and is not just another International Hotel that lives on its own isolated from its local society.I particularly liked the presentation of local celebrations, weddings, business events etc with authentic music and entertainment. It would be a good film setting for a contemporary social and political drama.

This hotel was better and worse than expected. From the photos and reviews, i was expecting less. This is an old hotel. Although the rooms were very basic with old furnishings, the grounds behind the hotel were better than expected. Nice pool terrace and BBQ on the beach every night The food was a little better than average. The service was ok and the staff mostly friendly.

The real down side is security refused to allow my friends, that i was visiting there, to come up to my room during the day. They said hotel policy was no visitors in the room.

I had traveled 10000 kms to visit several friends that i had met online over the past 2 and a half years. They had traveled from various locations up to 3 hours away from Zamboanga to meet me.

I have never heard of a hotel that would not allow visitors in the room during daytime hours.

Also at check in i asked if they accept American Express and they assured me several times that they did. However they never took an imprint at checkin to verify the card. On checkout they said they couldnt process it and asked for anouther credit card....Fortunately I had another card cuz i didnt have any more cash.

I would never stay here again.

For US$25/night (this was in June '07) Lantaka Hotel is the most affordable place to stay in Zamboanga City. It's an old hotel but it has a swimming pool,by the sea, walking distance to several banks & when it's fruit season you can go 2-4 blocks away to buy tropical fruits, price of food is very reasonable(actually cheaper) & service was not bad at all. One thing I like with this hotel is that it's a non-smoking establishment. Their room is spartan but clean & their bathroom has cold/hot shower with bathtub.
The outside bar is a pleasant place to drink & watch the sun/scenery. The aircon in our room was not as cold as we expect but I was sound sleep anyway.
This hotel is actually very close to the city wharf. For US31(2008) I fairly recommend this hotel.

This hotel is the veritable queen of lodgings in the city. The hotel is the southern counterpart of the Manila Hotel as it was widely patronized and refurbished by Imelda Marcos during Martial Law. It is now being run by a consortium of owners including Monsignor Cruz, a former priest now politician.

The hotel is located strategically between City Hall and Fort Pilar, the Spanish era fortification housing the image of Our Lady of the Pillar, the patroness of the Zamboanga Peninsula. The hotel faces the Moro Gulf with a view of Basilan Island.

Recent work on the hotel has improved and preserved the lobby, veranda, and coffee shop/restaurant. Old wood, capiz and furnishings from the Fifties and Sixties with flower arrangements adorn the interiors. The grand ballroom has been expanded to double its size, allowing for conventions of up to two hundred attendees; another ballroom will be upgraded soon.

The hallways and rooms however show their age. They resemble old barracks or army hospitals during WWII with their thick walls and standard white paint. The rooms are generously sized especially those facing the sea and pool but furnished with what can only be classified as cheap tropic.

Breakfast was generously sized but choices were limited: I mean why a choice between fruit juice OR fresh fruit and not both?

Service is fairly standard with most of the wait staff old timers who can probably name all the guests the hotel has had over the ages...would make for interesting conversation over a beer at the veranda bar.

A very good choice for a first time visit to the Queen City of Western Mindanao
