Garden Orchid Hotel
Ranked #1 of 5 Hotels in Zamboanga City
Reviewed January 24, 2013

This is the best hotel in the city in my opinion. I have been in Zamboanga for several times already and I believe that this is the best and highest star leveled hotel in the city. It is also near the airport which is a plus. The standards actually surpassed my expectations. Their rooms are great and at par with the big hotels in Manila and Makati which is quite surprising. The new wing is nice and great. So make sure to get rooms at the new wing if possible. The view is also nice!

The food is okay however I think they have to improve more on the service department. I think they also have to improve the cleanliness of their restaurant buffet area. Although I really recommend to dine out 'cos there are a lot of great restos in the city.

With respect to its price (in comparison with Metro Cities prices) this is indeed a great deal. I will rate it excellent on the premise that I stayed in their New Wing.

Room Tip: Definitely book rooms located at the New Wing!

I've had a 4 night stay at the Garden Orchid in Zamboanga.
First the GOOD; Friendly helpful desk service, the lush sub-tropical environment around the pool is kept beautifully and set like a jewel in the centre of the complex with the large windows providing a view of the pool from all aspects. The new Garden Wing looks like an upper-end South East Asian Hotel. For westerners there are security concerns and it does feel safe however I hope this is never tested. (see end of article for more) The city of Zamboanga has a fascinating history and with good local advice you can move around the town in a 'multi-cab' to check out the sights.
The BAD; This is a hotel in transition and this is my third time here and probablyu my last.
I spent the first two nights in the old part of the hotel in a wing that had all the charm of a dingy basement. I made the mistake of moving the bed slightly and found whole bundles of dust and dirt beneath. The rooms including the bathrooms in the old annex are in a dirty and dilapidated and in a state of neglect and they still want PHP 2,500 per night (!) which is absolutely unacceptable. I then transferred to the new wing where they charge a Manila price for a provincial standard double room (PHP 3,500). They have clearly spent a huge amount of money on the new rooms but they have overlooked the international standard requirement of wi-fi in the rooms; there is only a cable connection if you have that kind of device but no cable is offered or provided. An astounding planning omission.
The UGLY; They (and this is a exclusively an Owner / Management issue) really have let the poor state of the older rooms get out of hand. The price for these dirty little hovels should be nearer PHP 1,200 and they are clearly relying on the lack of competition and proximity to the airport for their trade. Most worrying of all for the future is that the almost brand new Garden Annex is already showing signs of the creeping neglect that has been allowed to continue for 20 years and steadily ruin the old part of the hotel. The management of the housekeeping / cleaning and maintenance is already creaking badly (see photo from beautifully furnished bathroom that already has cracked and filthy tiles in the corner). The edges of the desk
have been left damaged and the the top sheet on one of the beds had a huge stain on it.
It is such a shame as the potential here is great but as an international traveler and outsider looking in I am sorry to say that if the Garden Orchid expects the shiny exterior to carry them through the next few years while demanding high prices but using inferior management and training levels they will just slowly ruin the new area even if they plan to refurnish the old rooms.
In summary this is poor value for money but again they rely on lack of competition in the area and to be fair this is an 'interesting' and exceptional environment and maybe I ask too much but there again the GOH is saying it provides these standards so there it is!
Security / Local concerns:This place is a long way down south and if you go just a little further in that direction you will find Basilan island and the rest of the Sulu peninsula which takes you down to Borneo / Malaysia and on these islands (including Jolo and Sulu) is where the west is playing out the latest south east asian proxy war but this time with Iran in the guise of the Abu Sayaf versus the Philippine military. This adds a nice edge and extra shot of adrenalin when you stay here :) Westerners and other targets have been known to have been captured and whisked of to the peninsula on fast launches to be held for ransom or to be killed so just be aware, don't be an idiot and ALWAYS travel with a trusted local and don't get paranoid as incidents like these are extremely RARE.

Stayed 1 night from Manila for a wedding and NYE celebration. They have a strange policy: Delivery guys aren't allowed to go the rooms to do what they're supposed to do—deliver. Instead, I was asked to come down 5 floors and pick up food for 15 people! It absolutely made no sense! There was only 1 hotel attendant available to assist (strange for an establishment of this scale) and it took several trips. The delivery guys waited at the lobby. Total failure on applying efficiencies.

If this hotel is shooting for 5-star service which they probably have a shot at, their level of service has got to get better. That applies to the entire city.

we stayed here for two nights...the rooms are awesome...flat tv, ref, and other amenities like in most hotels in Makati...the new wing is nice...love the chandelier made of capiz shells..the food is good...i love the names of the rooms....the hallway is well furnished..good job., this hotel is far better than in Pryce Hotel in CDO...their conventions are big and spacious, very ideal for conventions, big parties, Wedding and corporate meeting..i would like to suggest the management if they can play very cozy and mellow music in the lobby than tuning in FM radio station...or place a big flat tv in the lobby then play something about their city.

I stayed in the old wing and the rooms there were quite old and a bit too dark. I had the opportunity to take a look at the rooms in the new wing and I must say that they look way better. Flat screen tv, electric kettle, more toiletries, well-lit rooms and the overall feel of the room was very light and clean. It is a bit pricier but I think it's worth the upgrade if you are staying for more than a night.
Check-in and check out was very convenient and the people there were quite helpful.
I didn't get the opportunity to sample the food since I checked out early. Unfortunately, they were not able to prepare the sandwich that I requested on time. Aside from that minor incident, my stay was quite pleasant and the service was quite good.

Room Tip: Go for the rooms in the new wing.

The Graden Orchid Hotel is I would say mix of family and business hotel. was so schocked to see that is hotel is at par with 5-star hotel in various hotel i stayed in. In comparison to crown plaza this can compete.

I stayed at the old wing of the hotel.

I think it would have been better if I stayed at the new wing.

Maybe next time.

Only thing i liked about this hotel is the location. Its quite a ride to the center of town but its a stone throw away from the airport.
