Kandawgyi Hill Resort

An old British colonial house converted into a small guesthouse/hotel. It was the location of the British intelligence unit after WW2.

Good clean rooms, with helpful staff, set in a beautiful location. Food is not great and I would suggest dinner at one of the many excellent local restaurants.

Breakfast was basic but adequate.

The nearby botanical gardens are worth an afternoons stroll.

We stayed just one night in the lovely British hill town. Being January, the days were plenty warm, but it was cool at night. I loved finding a hot water bottle in the beautiful room. It reminded me of my childhood and keeping toes warm before electric blankets. There was plenty of hot water for my nighttime shower. Unfortunately, my traveling companions always prefer a morning shower and there was no hot water in their room which spoiled the hotel for them. They made three trips down to the desk staff asking for help with no results after someone did go to their room. English may have been the problem. The best we can figure is that the hot water power switch wasn't turned on in their bathroom. Breakfast was fine. There didn't appear to be many guests.

Maymyo (Pyin U Lwin) is such a beautiful old part of of Burma. As we approached the hotel it looked great on approach however that was the highlight.

This is unfortunate as the place has so much potential. The location is ideal, just a 3 minute walk from the gate of the gardens (which are fantastic). It is about a 5 minute drive into town (or about 10-15 mins in a horse drawn cart.

The hotel is in two parts. There are the rooms which are part of the old colonial house as well as about 8-10 bungalows which are built off to the side. We stayed in the bungalows. The rooms were basic however there was no air-conditioning. In the modern age, this isn't acceptable - even in Burma. In summer I imagine it would be stifling. We were here in winter and were quite cold - particularly in the dimly lit bathroom out the back.

The restaurant was quite ordinary. This was a shame - it could have been beautiful on the verandah of the old house. Instead, it was used by the staff to watch television while guests ate. There are no other restaurants within easy walking distance so chances are you will end up eating here. The breakfast on the other hand was simple but good.

Years ago, I'm sure this was the nicest place to stay in Maymyo. However with all the new development in Burma over the last year and a bit, you can see all of the new hotels opening up. Many of these are near to this one but newer. I would take a gamble and try something different.

This was the least enjoyable of our hotels in Myanmar and, in truth, we were glad leave. We arrived after dark on a dank evening, so could not enjoy, the terrace (which looked closed), ate a poor meal and huddled in rooms which were on the cool side. We left early the following morning for a train trip and had to miss out on a shower as the hot water was not turned on. Overall my guess is that the average stay here would be better than ours but.....

We stayed here for 3 nights and really enjoyed the hotel and staff. We had a junior suite in the main building with view to the lake, it was a lovely room with loads of space.
The breakfast was good and we eat out on the verandah rather than the dining room.
The staff spoke good English which was quite unusual for this town.
Very short walk to the botanical gardens but a motorcycle taxi or horse cart ride to town.
I would say this is the best choice in Pyin Oo Lwin. A little expensive but all hotels prices seem to have increased recently.

Room Tip: Go for the junior suite it's worth the few extra dollars

I spent one night at Kandawgyi Hill Resort. As other reviewers have stated it's a quiet place to escape. As other reviewers have also said, its rooms are overdue for a makeover but are functional enough.

Not much to say as my stay here was so brief. The staff was friendly if somewhat reserved. I borrowed a bike one afternoon to ride into town, but it was really too flimsy and not equipped for the hills and rough roads around Pyin-U-Lwin. Cycling here could be a lot of fun but better equipment is needed.

If you're looking for a nice meal the Golden Triangle Cafe in the town center can't be beat. Also, there is a small roadside restaurant close to Kandawgyi on the road to town that has good food, great service, and lots of people-watching.

This hotel really feels as if you are stepping back in time. The house was used as a British Intelligence centre during WW2 but there is little evidence of its history on the walls of the building. Some photos and artefacts from the time would really help the atmosphere.

The main house has some bedrooms (which I didn't see) but the majority of accommodation is in more recently built bungalows. These are fairly simple but spacious and comfortable. There is something of a tired air about them and they would benefit from a spruce up but are clean and perfectly satisfactory as they are. TV, a fridge and next to them, carefully laid out hot water bottles. There's no a/c but can't imagine that it would be needed although there is a ceiling fan.

One of the main pleasures in staying here was sitting out on the lovely terraced area overlooking the lake sipping a drink before dinner. There are lots of incredibly polite staff who are almost falling over themselves in their efforts to be helpful. Prices for branded drinks are astronomical; we stuck to the local beer!

It's a 20 minute or so stroll to town but less than 5 minutes to the Botanical Gardens.

If I could, I would have graded this hotel a 3 and a half but decided to go up rather than down as it was an atmospheric and friendly place to spend a couple of nights and we really enjoyed it.

It's a shame that Trip Advisor have placed this hotel in the Mandalay section rather than in the Pyin Oo Lwin (Maymyo) section, where it should be.
