“Very quiet place”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 30, 2012

I spent one night at Kandawgyi Hill Resort. As other reviewers have stated it's a quiet place to escape. As other reviewers have also said, its rooms are overdue for a makeover but are functional enough.

Not much to say as my stay here was so brief. The staff was friendly if somewhat reserved. I borrowed a bike one afternoon to ride into town, but it was really too flimsy and not equipped for the hills and rough roads around Pyin-U-Lwin. Cycling here could be a lot of fun but better equipment is needed.

If you're looking for a nice meal the Golden Triangle Cafe in the town center can't be beat. Also, there is a small roadside restaurant close to Kandawgyi on the road to town that has good food, great service, and lots of people-watching.

This hotel really feels as if you are stepping back in time. The house was used as a British Intelligence centre during WW2 but there is little evidence of its history on the walls of the building. Some photos and artefacts from the time would really help the atmosphere.

The main house has some bedrooms (which I didn't see) but the majority of accommodation is in more recently built bungalows. These are fairly simple but spacious and comfortable. There is something of a tired air about them and they would benefit from a spruce up but are clean and perfectly satisfactory as they are. TV, a fridge and next to them, carefully laid out hot water bottles. There's no a/c but can't imagine that it would be needed although there is a ceiling fan.

One of the main pleasures in staying here was sitting out on the lovely terraced area overlooking the lake sipping a drink before dinner. There are lots of incredibly polite staff who are almost falling over themselves in their efforts to be helpful. Prices for branded drinks are astronomical; we stuck to the local beer!

It's a 20 minute or so stroll to town but less than 5 minutes to the Botanical Gardens.

If I could, I would have graded this hotel a 3 and a half but decided to go up rather than down as it was an atmospheric and friendly place to spend a couple of nights and we really enjoyed it.

It's a shame that Trip Advisor have placed this hotel in the Mandalay section rather than in the Pyin Oo Lwin (Maymyo) section, where it should be.

This hotel has a few rooms in an old colonial house and some newer bungalows in the garden. We had a bungalow, which was quite large and adequately fitted out but it felt cool and uninviting. The bathroom was also large with good hot water for the shower. The dining room in the main building was bare with no ambiance and we were the only people eating there, which did not help. Service and food were okay though.

The hotel is very close to the attractive Kandawgyi gardens and the grounds of the hotel are also a pleasant area to relax.

This place could be really nice, but it obviously hasn't been kept up and is showing its age. The rooms are huge but COLD and with no ambiance, same as with the old central house where the dining and registration are. A little TLC would go a long way. Not sure about the free entrance to Kandawgyi Gardens which are just up the road- we went one day and paid the entrance fee and the next morning tried to take a run through there without luck.

Very quiet and close to the gardens (free entry for guests!). Friendly staff and good service during the two nights we stayed there. A little out of the way from town and on the pricy side for Burma, though.

Located in Pyin oo Lwin, the hotel is a throwback to colonial days and was obviously built back then. Huge rooms, reasonable TV's , huge bathrooms with good hot water and very comfortable overall. Unreliable power in the town though. Breakfast was good and dinner was good though pricey. Excellently located for the wonderful botanical gardens, but too far from the rest of the town. All in all a good choice.

We stayed for two nights and really enjoyed the experience. The room was clean and tastefully decorated. No air-cond. A portable electric heater was provided, which was a bit insufficient in the cold winter night.

What we liked the most was the great service provided by the friendly and attentive staff. When we had to reconfirm our flight from Mandalay to Rangoon, the manager on duty made several long distant calls to the airline and made sure the seats were confirmed, and declined to accept the cost of the calls from me. On the day we checked out, the hired taxi we previously booked showed up with a drunken driver. Before we asked for help, the manager on duty (Ms Aye Aye Linn) already called the taxi company twice to replace the driver and, when the driver became aggressive, she defused the situation in a very professional manner and obtained a new driver for us.

We will definitely stay there again in our future visits, for which we have already started planning..
