This is by far the best hotel I've stayed in when traveling in China. The staff were very helpful and attentive, meeting guests quickly and efficiently to get them checked in. We ate in the attached restaurant and had a fabulous meal, again with great service. The wine list was extensive and of very good quality. The room was cozy (not huge) with very clean and comfortable furniture. The buffet breakfast had many options for any type of breakfast you could want. The staff were great, making sure my coffee cup stayed full. This was truly an oasis in the desert

This hotel fulfills almost all requirements: very friendly stuff, spacious rooms, comfortable beds, comprehensive breakfast at the café as well as the club floor lounge (Don't miss the Chinese noodles!), fully equipped fitness center with a unique view to the city (There is also a spa.) and a proper business center. And all of that at very decent rates. Only the free Wifi had occasional outages. And never forget to ask for a non-smoking room!

Had a wonderful club floor room. We were unable to get a roll-out bed for 4 year daughter (they did provide a crib but it was too small), but she loved the chair bed made by placing two chairs together. The room was spacious and well equipped.

It was south facing and it got too hot as the A/C was not running in late October. We had requested to have the windows opened and that helped to resolved the issue.

The buffet was excellent, a wonderful mix of all foods. The club lodge had a much smaller selections, but was still better then most.

The pool was more of a exercise facility rather than a recreation space. Great for lap swimming. Note: The rules require swimmers to wear swim caps, so pack one.

Nice business center and very friendly staff!!

Great location for access to the city center shopping and nearby parks.

Fireworks every day and night. Great viewing from the upper floors.

Would surely stay there again in the future.

Room Tip: I suggest a north facing room to avoid heat issues from sun. Adding heat is easier then cooling dow...

This is a large hotel suited to conferences and business travel. It is a 5 star modern hotel.

The staff are excellent and the service good. Nothing seems to be too much trouble. There is a shopping mall next door and some local restaurants around the back that give you a flavour for the region. We heard some Mongolian larynx singing in a restaurant sharing rice wine with our hosts. It was quite an experience.

Was there four nights on this trip and really enjoyed the hotel. Breakfast was excellent, the room spacious and comfortable and a great spa. The staff was friendly and helpful. Will definately stay there again when in Baotou.

I had a fantastic few nights at this hotel. The breakfast buffet was amazing and was treated more like a friend than a guest. The Italian Chef was so friendly as were the Chinese staff. Everyone had time to chat and ask if we needed anything. It was a great stay. The room was a little on the warm side but guess what, had a cold shower and I cooled myself right down.

Please stay at this hotel and don't let the moaners on this site put you off. They'd probably moan that the Great Wall was too long, some people are never happy.

Enjoy this fantastic hotel.

Spent two nights in this hotel in June 2012 and find this review very hard to write. First, a few of the staff were excellent in accomodating special needs to travel outside Baotou. While there are many (and I mean MANY) small details that are not right in this hotel it fails as a hotel of any level due to the lack of air conditioning at night.

The first night I suffered through arriving after having had one of those epic domestic China air travel delays of 22 hours with no sleep. After arriving I could have slept in an oven which I basically did.

The second night starting at 1am I called the front desk and got a variety of explanations on the ac situation, just listen to some of the responses I got : the airconditioning is turned off at 11pm automatically by the hotel owner and no one who works in the hotel can change it, no other rooms are complaining, are you sure your ac is turned on, and finally the air conditioning has failed tonight but will definitely be fixed in the early morning.

Finally at 4 I asked the duty manager to come up to the room because I was considering sleeping in the lobby. He was very apologetic but did not know what a fan was. I drew a picture, made some noise, and finally resorted to google translate and he understood. He asked me to wait 5 minutes for one and 45 min later I got a proper floor standing fan. He then, bizarrely, winked at me and said the airconditioning would be fixed soon. It was either 5.30 or 6 on the dot when the ac resumed throughout the building. During this time the hallway temperature was so hot you could understand why some people thought there was a fire in the building.

It would have been cooler to sleep outside in the park across the street.

With little sleep I delayed going to breakfast which is served until 10.30. I arrived at 10.05 only to see the breakfast breakdown was underway. I immediately pointed this out and they stopped where they were but nothing was put back. No dish names, no egg dishes, really incredibly poor service.

At checkout later that morning I asked to see the manager on duty, Doris. When I said that I was unwilling to pay for the last night because I got no sleep she asked me not to give the hotel trouble, there is a new Sheraton being built directly behind the hotel, and she would give me a free ride to the airport as compensation. She asked me to wait an hour for the hotel shuttle bus.

I told her I did not have a hour to wait so she said she would give us "special service" and arrange for a taxi. She went out to get a taxi and when I asked not to pay the last night I was only told Doris, who had just left, could authorize it and I should negotiate with her. I asked them to call her but she did not respond to their calls.

Nearly 20 minutes passed and I was ready to go out and get my taxi because was running very short when Doris reappeared. She said I needed to write a letter to complain but when I asked to who she just said the hotel. But she said as compensation she offered a free ride to the airport. So we got it the taxi, and had to pay the fare upon arrival at the airport. We called from the airport to make sure the drive was not double charging us but Doris said the special service she was offering was to get the taxi for us herself. There would be no other compensation.

Interestingly enough though Shangri-La sends me an email survey after every visit I did not get one for this visit. And I have been waiting for it!

Over the years you could easily describe me as a big fan of Shangri-La. No more, this hotel was terrible and unwilling or unable to do anything about their significant deficiencies. I will be contacting Shangri-La in Hong Kong directly about it. Most of they stay was completely unacceptable for a hotel of this level.
