“A true gem!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 26, 2009

My husband, daughter & I just had the most wonderful stay at The Garden & Sea Inn, 4188 Nelson Rd P.O. Box 275 New Church, Virginia 23415, www.gardenandseainn.com. The innkeepers,
Thomas & Doro are friendly & did everything possible to make us feel welcome, comfortable and well-cared for. They have renovated the buildings with tender, loving care. We stayed in the Chablis Suite, which was just beautiful, with the perfect set-up for us (bedroom) & our daughter (sleeper sofa, TV, refrigerator & coffee maker on the other side of the bathroom, which featured a spa bathtub). The breakfast was out of this world, way too much food, & they volunteered to pack up the baked goods for later in the day. When they noticed our daughter preferred the delicious sausage to anything else, they gave her a double helping the rest of our stay. when the weather turned rainy, they asked whether she liked puzzles, and left 3 in the room. The grounds are beautiful. What makes this place unique is that pets are also welcome, but everything is so well kept, that you would never know it was also pet-friendly. There are baskets for fresh & used beach towels for dogs on each building's porch; there are bags & a receptacle for dog waste. We brought our Brittany spaniel & had a great time. We took advantage of their Winter Special (tho it was April), & enjoyed 1 night free, 2 complimentary bottles of wine, coffee, biscotti, and a basket of dog treats in our suite; snacks & beverages were always well-supplied in the main building, near the fireplace. Stay here whether or not you have children and/or pets; you will feel totally pampered.

this place advertises itself as being "near Chincoteague" but it is nowhere near the village or the sea. it is down a side road in a fairly dodgy/redneck neighbourhood. apart from the location - cool old house with very clean and retro rooms with a nice enough breakfast.

None of our advertising has ever claimed we were IN Chincoteague. We only advertise to be NEAR Chincoteague. Being just 11 miles (or 20 minutes) away, we believe to be close enough to use the term “near”.
We think we are pretty specific with our location: Our website says “near”, which obviously means “not there”. It states very clearly (first page, second sentence) “located just eleven miles from Chincoteague”. And it also displays our physical address (which is New Church, not Chincoteague). So we really can’t see anything misleading.

Our neighborhood is not much different from what you find on other places around, including Chincoteague. Our guests usually don’t mind this or the short drive and choose us, because we offer much more comfort - larger rooms, spacious parlors, a nicely landscaped 5 acre lot, ponds, patios and even a heated pool. There is no comparable place on Chincoteague! The price our guests have to pay for that is this 20 minute drive to the Island.

Furthermore: Most guests stay several days in the area and visit a lot more than just Chincoteague. Staying with us (as opposed to the Island) brings them 20 minutes closer to Onancock, Cape Charles, Crisfield and everything else on the Shore, which saves a lot of driving.

My husband and I are always looking for places where we can vacation with our dog, and this is definitely one of the best we've experienced. We stayed in the Chablis Suite, which was actually nicer than it looked in the photos on the Inn's website. It was surprisingly spacious (private screened-in porch downstairs, private deck upstairs, sitting room with couch and dining area, large bedroom, and beautiful bathroom with two sinks and whirlpool tub), and the doggy bowl full of dog treats made our pet feel very welcome. The place was spotlessly clean and well-maintained.

The owners were welcoming and helpful, and had lots of suggestions for places to go. The main house was not yet open for the season for breakfast, so Dorothy brought breakfast to our room every morning, which we much preferred. We never left hungry in the morning-- besides the main course, breakfast always came with pastries, fruit, coffee, and juice. Next to the house our room was in was the Garden House, where port wine and snacks were always available, as well as access to kitchen facilities.

Directions to two pet-friendly beaches were left in the room, one 20 minutes away and one 50 minutes away. It's definitely worth the drive to go to the farther one, on Assateague Island. It is a much nicer beach and you may spot wild ponies. They also leave restaurant menus in the room, although our favorite restaurant of the trip was not among them-- the seafood restaurant Bill's, where we were able to pick up carry-out to take back to our room (thanks to a previous reviewer for recommending!).

Overall, we had a great time, and we and our dog can't wait to return!

I desperately needed a break from the cold winter and the frantic pace in New Jersey, and I found the perfect retreat in the Garden and Sea Inn. It has everything I want when I travel - beauty, tranquility, access to attractions, and terrific food.

The b&b is in a blink-and-you-miss-it town on US Route 13 on the eastern shore of Virginia, just over the state line from Pocomoke, MD and very close to the turn-off from 13 to get to Chincoteague and Assateague Islands. But the off-the-beaten-path location is a great asset, because it is free from noise and crowds while still being near the things to see and do in the area.

The property is very pretty, a collection of Victorian buildings on a few well-tended acres. I loved my room (the Lighthouse Room), attractive and comfortable with a soul-warming gas stove. Owners Dorothee and Tom are perfect hosts, welcoming and gracious without being the least bit intrusive. I greatly appreciate that the property is also pet-friendly, because it meant I was able to bring my pooch along with me when I stayed here. They had a doggie-welcome basket and food bowl for her and a chilled bottle of white wine for me when we arrived.

The breakfast part of the b&b was as good as I have had anywhere. Some of the dishes were sweet (French toast with cherries) and some were savory (zucchini-artichoke-mushroom quiche), but all were expertly prepared and absolutely yummy. I didn't need lunch after any of those morning feasts.

I would go back to the Garden and Sea in a heartbeat.

We spent four days and three nights here to escape the DC inauguration mess. Not only was the room beautifully decorated and spotlessly clean, but the owners were top notch. We haven't stayed at a bed and breakfast since we had kids and a dog. There were special toys and puzzles for the kids to play with and our dog got a treat bag!! She slept in front of the fireplace while we went to see Chincoteague and explore. The day we went to Assateague, she went too and got to run on the beach.
Breakfast was great and different every day. The decor was tasteful and not too fussy, as some B&Bs are. There were snacks available for every taste and bottled water and even port in the evening. The property is maintained very well and I laughed when I read the recent negative review...sounds like a psycho!
However, the best thing about the Inn are the proprietors - Dorothy and Thomas. They are so nice, so welcoming and so suited for their chosen line of work - we just adored them!
We are planning to return as soon as finances allow!

My husband and I wanted to spend a nice and quiet Thanksgiving weekend in Chincoteague with our dog and we found the perfect place at the Garden and Sea Inn B&B. Thomas and Dorothee, the new owners, are superb hosts and very customer service oriented. They truly made our experience a delightful one. Morever, the European-style breakfast was outstanding made with fresh ingredients and very savory. We absolutely loved it, but our dog enjoyed even more, which made our entire trip worth it. We will be definitely going back!

I took my husband, (and two dogs) here for our 1st Annvrsy. I loved the quaint atmosphere and the hospitality of Dorothee and Tom were OUTSTANDING!

New Castle does not have a lot of things to do, especially in October but that was the main reason I wanted to stay here, to get away from the hustle and bustle and force my husband to relax, which he had no choice but to do.

We were unable to use the swimming pool because it was too cold, but again..to be expected in October. I enjoyed relaxing on the hammock, and the rooms were very well maintained, and beautiful.

I wish that they had food accomdations for lunch and dinner, as the breakefeast was soo good I could not wait for the next day to arrive. It is a little of a drive to get to where you need to go, but Tom was very knowledable in places to go and directions to get there.

We visited the Assatageaue Island ($15.00 charge to enter park, not happy on that) and also the Chint. Island, had a good time, and would visit this locations again, maybe not the park, but def. the Chin. Island.

If you are looking for a lot of things to do, New Castle in the fall is not going to be your thing, but if you are looking to get some quality time in with your loved one, with a very pet friendly Inn, this is the place to go!!!
