“worth the detour”
Review of Foamhenge - CLOSED

Foamhenge

Even if you're not in the area for the obvious Natural Bridge or safari zoo, Foamhenge is a must-see. There's nothing like having your facebook friends comment on your pictures with things like "I didn't know Stonehenge had mountains in the background" or "it's 'Stone', 'Stonehenge', not 'foam'".

In other words, it's a pretty daggone good replica.

Hark is that Druids I hear squeaking in the wind? No it is but the petrolium god Styrofoam waging its endless war against the elements and slowly, but surely, losing.

This was originally built as an april fools joke and was not intended to be as permanent as it is. this has led to the atraction slowly but surely detrioating, including that trademark styrofoam squeak when the wind blows. The wizard figure is cast from a death mask taken from one of the artists dear friends who passed away many years ago.

It really really really needs another coat of paint, but I doubt it will ever get it as Mark Klein, the artist, seems to like to place his instilations and let them rise or fall on their own afterwords. you will pass his workshop on the way to this location and it has the same rundown air as this atraction and the surrounding area does. Much like a 70's polaroid that the chemicals have kept working on in the sunlight slowly fading to oblivion.

Now that I have you totally depressed do stop in though. It is what us southern folk would call a "hoot". Its totally free and always open, rain or shine. Get your picture taken because its only a matter of time before holigans or mother nature take your chance to see this away.

Also of note is the fact that this is simply in some farmers field. their is no admission, but their are also no concessions, no sourviners, no bathrooms, and it is not handicap accesible easily. It is what it is, foam block in a field in the shape of a henge.

What a fun place. I think I love the artists signs even more than the work.

Now that the world has not ended 12/2012 get out and see this place. Its worth the stop and walk up the hill.

Have some fun, bring your camera and stop by something your not going to get another chance to see.

Just a really cool place to visit. We were in the area visiting our son at college, so we stopped by. It is plain fun. U need an open mind and a love of odd places to enjoy it as much as we did. Road up is curved and muddy but there is a parking area up top. Good place for pics. The guy who made it must be a real free spirit. So verdict is : GO!!

You may never get to see Stonehenge so why not visit the next best thing. This is a realistic replica of the real thing, built out of foam blocks and assembled in accurate proportions. This is so close to Natural Bridge and the Virginia Safari Park that it can be a day's worth of activities.
