Celebrated a birthday at the Mt Vernon Inn Restaurant and were very pleased with food and service. Atmosphere for a romantic outing is excellent. We arrived well before our reservation time and were graciously accommodated with an earlier seating. We rate this restaurant in the top one percent of all restaurants we have experienced including exotic locations in San Francisco and Honolulu. If in the Washington DC area, don't miss this one for an outstanding dining experience.

We have visited Mount Vernon quite often and this December we took a group of 7 family members to the evening Christmas tour. The tour was, as always, very well done and delightful. But we made the mistake of having dinner at their restaurant. We have been here once several years back and enjoyed it. But this time the food was totally institutional, WAY overpriced, and the service marginal.
As a warning to others - and I apologize that I'm getting this out there after the holidays, DO NOT EVER order their peanut soup! Let that die - it would be a service to all! It was like Jiff which had been slightly diluted. Your spoon will stand up in it - mine did! And we were not the only patrons who commented about it. We actually were laughing with a couple neaby as they sampled theirs.
People, we all need to send bad food back to the kitchen. I have never done it before, but after this, I am now inspired. It's the only way things will change.
Several of us then made the mistake of ordering their "specialty" cocktails where no one tasted the alcohol that should have been used in them. I mean a martini, it's all alcohol, right?
Finally dinner came, orders of the duck and the short ribs - both institutional, at best.
I had been telling our guests that it was so worth it to miss some of the museum and have dinner at the inn. If you have the choice, forget the Inn spend your time at the museum, and go to one of the area restaurants - even if it's a pizzaria!

Excellent service, and pretty decent food, considering they have a captive audience for anybody not wanting fast food at the food court.

The Mount Vernon Inn is conveniently located next to the gift shops for Mount Vernon. There are no reservations (except for special holiday events like Thanksgiving), so its first come first serve. On busy days, you may wait a while, so plan ahead.

The restaurant itself is cozy and resembles an 18th century tavern, with open fireplaces and decor to match.

All the wait staff are also dressed as they stepped out of the 1780s.

The menu has a wide selection of sandwiches, entrees, salads and appetizers, all with a mid-Atlantic flair.

Some of the highlights include open-faced turkey sandwich, hot-brown, turkey pot pie, and other such dishes. There are daily specials; on the day we were there, the meat and potato pie was on the list and it was delicious. Apparently, it was the same recipe that George Washington himself considered to be his favorite meal.

There is a wide selection of beverages and desserts as well; be sure to try the desserts, they are worth it.

The wait staff are friendly and will meet your needs, sometimes without you needing to ask, such as bringing you a refill on your drink or extra napkins.

The cost is reasonable and probably not more than what you would pay at a pub in Old Town.

Like I said though, plan ahead, especially on busy days. You can, however, put your name in and then browse the gift shops; they will come find you if you are in the immediate area.

Ask for Elsie. The best food and service we received while visiting DC. Disappointed that our reservation was at 5 and we arrived 15 min early and was told we had to come back. There was a waiting room that we could have been ushered into to wait. The food was outstanding. The BEST. I had the short ribs which were very tender and filled with flavor. The steak was cooked to perfection. The fried cheese is to die for.
