Owner description: After nearly a 200-year hiatus and a multi-million dollar reconstruction, George Washington's Distillery & Gristmill is back in business - producing grain products powered by a 16-foot waterwheel and the same rye whiskey that made the Founding Father the nation's most successful whiskey producer in the years after his presidency. Located at the original site, George Washington's Gristmill highlights his vision for America's future as "granary of the world;" while his Distillery is the only site in North America that demonstrates 18th-century distilling from seed to barrel.

“Another great addition to your day at Mount Vernon!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 29, 2014

Admission to Mount Vernon also includes entrance to George Washington’s Grist Mill and Distillery, which is just down the road. The grist mill tour surprised us as they actually started the wheel! It was noisy, but fascinating to see the stones in action. The trail from the grist mill leads to the distillery which actually produces Washington’s “recipe” a couple times each year. The grist mill and distillery have limited parking, so it is not recommended for RVs or larger vehicles during busy times of the year.

Thank you for your review and visit to the Distillery & Gristmill. It really is a fascinating place to get away from the crowds near the mansion and see a different side of George Washington. Glad you got to see it!

“The industrial side of Mount Vernon”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 4, 2013

I have been to several other historic grist mills, so there was little there that was new for me, but the other visitors on my tour seemed engaged, so the docents were doing a good job for them.

I came mostly for the distillery. Having been to several active distilleries, I was fascinated to see how spirits were made two centuries ago. Our guide also works as a distiller when it is in production during the winter, meaning he knew exactly how whiskey is made there.

At this site, I got a better sense of what life was like at Mount Vernon, since it was, above all, a commercial enterprise for Washington.

“George Washington, Entrepreneur”

Make sure to allow extra time to visit the Grist Mill and distillery when visiting Mt. Vernon. A fascinating piece of engineering considering the times. The guides were very friendly and knowledgeable. The mill and distillery shows the business acumen side of Washington.

“WOW!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 22, 2013

Washington's reconstructed grist mill and distillery was a GREAT experience from the welcome at the gift shop to the guides. The guide and miller were informative, gave an interesting and informative tour, and were both education and entertaining. Our tour included a man who knew a great deal about distilling and us, who knew nothing. Our guide answered our questions patiently with humor and warmth and obvious enjoyment and devotion to his topic. Five stars, all around, for this slice of history in general and about General Washington.
