Owner description: After nearly a 200-year hiatus and a multi-million dollar reconstruction, George Washington's Distillery & Gristmill is back in business - producing grain products powered by a 16-foot waterwheel and the same rye whiskey that made the Founding Father the nation's most successful whiskey producer in the years after his presidency. Located at the original site, George Washington's Gristmill highlights his vision for America's future as "granary of the world;" while his Distillery is the only site in North America that demonstrates 18th-century distilling from seed to barrel.

“Nice”
Reviewed October 19, 2013

A few miles from the Mount Vernon estate is the Grist Mill and distillery. Nice presentation from costumed people. Very interesting and beautiful surroundings.

“Great place to visit!!”
Reviewed October 10, 2013

Great place to visit for visitors and locals. I have done so many times. Would recomend the Gris Mill and George Washington beloved Mt. Vernon. When I visited the properties were privately owned and there was a charge for admission.

Thanks for you visit! Not a lot of people know that the Distillery & Gristmill is included in admission to Mount Vernon Estate, or just $5 on its own. I'm glad that you enjoyed both.

“Loved our visit!”
Reviewed October 10, 2013

This location is just a couple minutes from Mount Vernon. It was well worth the visit and a must see! Parking was ample and free. The historic attraction is free with your purchase to enter Mount Vernon. Everyone was so friendly and so much fun. All the tour guides were very informative and they told the story with such passion. It was very interesting. The mill actually worked! We enjoyed this as much as Mount Vernon. We'll be back. Thanks to all of you for a great visit!

“pleasing stop”
Reviewed September 23, 2013

We happened upon the grist mill after leaving the Mount Vernon property. The tour price is included in your Mount Vernon ticket ($5.00 if you don't go to Mount Vernon) We started the tour in the grist mill.. the feel is completely different then Mount Vernon. The information that is provided about the begin middle and end process and history is fulfilling and mind boggling. The guides are very knowledgeable about the process of milling grain and encourage questions and touching. The Distillery is the same in feel and atmosphere. The guide spoke with such passion about the product you wish you were there on production day. A very good stop to make.. Very good

So happy that you enjoyed your visit to the Distillery & Gristmill. You're right - it does have a different feel that visiting the Estate itself, but definitely adds to the overall experience!

“Hands-on History”
Reviewed September 14, 2013

Unlike museums where you view things through glass display cases from a distance, this site is very hands-on. The tour guides let you touch things and ask questions freely, so you can get a real grasp on how the grist mill and distillery process work. The buildings are reproductions, but are fully functional. The guide in the distillery was very informative.
