This place is great to get away from downtown DC for the day. The grounds are well kept and beautiful. There are a lot of things to see, so plan on most of the day. The house tour is nice but no photos can be taken inside. The various videos are interesting in providing history of George and the estate. The view of the Potomac from the porch is very nice. The attached museum has interesting exhibits. If you are planning on eating there, avoid the cafeteria style food court and head to the Mount Vernon Inn. The prices are very reasonable and you get a freshly prepared meal that tastes good. The turkey pie is delicious and the deserts were not bad either. Don't forget to check out the Grist Mill and Distillery on your way back to town. It is now included in your ticket and is worth a stop.

Mount Vernon is a victim of its own popularity. Bus after bus of tourists and school kids result in long lines to see the house. Visitors are herded through in a continuous line, inching forward from room to room. Interpreters staged throughout the house have rehearsed descriptions and talk without a break. Trouble is, visitors can hear only bits and pieces as they are directed through. Maybe the first part, maybe the last part, but never the whole story. The experience is very disjointed and unsatisfying.
This is very different from the tours at Montecello, where visitors are assigned to a group and a specific guide. The guide takes his/her group through the entire house, providing a cohesive narrative and a MUCH better, more enjoyable experience.

We had planned to stay for a couple of hours here. No one in our family had ever been here before.
I believe the cost was $18 for adults and $8 for kids 10 and under.
The visitor center (education center) right next to the ticket booth--looked brand new. They were showing a movie that I had wanted to see, but it had already started when we walked in. There was no timer saying how long it would be before the next show started. We looked at the model of the mansion, then decided to walk around the property. The grounds were very nice!! They have really tried to preserve what they could. I can almost imagine what it would have been like to live on the plantation at the time of GW.
The blacksmith was probably my kids favorite part of the day. Watching him make a new tool was so neat to them. The mansion was very nice and the view of the river was breathtaking. While the house was quite large, it still surprised me how small the rooms were.
There was a bit of walking, but nothing too bad!
The museum and gift stores are not to be missed. The artifacts in the museum and the descriptions were amazing.
The gift shop had lots to see and buy. I wish I would have had more time to shop.
My son did need some first aid while we were at Mt. Vernon. I asked for help and within 5 mins, we were wisked off to a special room where my son was given some help.
If you have a car on your visit to DC, I highly encourage you to visit Mt. Vernon!

Love this place. Really nicely displayed throughout museums and grounds. Must see film on Battle of Trenton. It "snows". See George's Teeth as well. Kids absolutely love it. Plan on at least 3-4 hours. Fabulous gift shops. From toys to wine made on grounds. In process of building another museum- learning center across street. Can't wait...

We only were going spend couple hours there but stayed entire day. Lots of walking but well worth it. There is so much to see we didn't get to it all but what we did see was fantastic. Staff all were informative, friendly, and helpful. Tour of house to all outer buildings and tomb really gave us insight. My husband and son had never been and they really enjoyed it. It's great family destination
