We and another couple recently stayed at the Inn At Montross and opted to also have dinner in their dining room. It was one of the best decisions we've ever made and one of the best dinners we've ever had. After sharing the strawberry pecan salad and the roasted red pepper soup, we ordered 4 different entrees and they all were fabulous. The flounder with grilled peaches and tender crisp green beans, the baked stuffed shrimp, the surf and turf (a perfect rockfish filet and a healthy sized piece of tender prime rib) were all wonderful. The 4th dish was absolutely the best thing I've ever eaten - with concurrence from my dining partners who all sampled it.... amazingly tender grilled scallops with cheesy grit cakes in a butter sauce that demanded a spoon to get it all. It was to die for! We even had dessert, which we never have.... a light cheesecake dish in thin layers alternated with fresh berries and a light cake with a layer of chocolate mousse. All this at prices that were less than some charged at third-rate restaurants in DC. This is a destination restaurant and well worth the drive to the northern neck of VA (and a great excuse to stay in one of the Inn's lovely rooms and visit the surrounding historic area and wineries). The servers are total professionals and you may be fortunate enough to be served by Hella, who is entertaining, charming, and even bakes the chocolate mousse cake. Just go!!
