“Ft. Lewis Lodge was awesome”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 26, 2012

We drove 981 miles to Ft. Lewis Lodge and it was totally worth it! John and Caryl (the innkeepers) were amazing and treated us like we were old friends. The property is spectacular: beautiful views of the Shenadoah Valley and the mountains. We saw deer, rabbits, and all sorts of birds. At dusk the fireflies put on a beautiful show. The food was unbelievable, we had oatmeal pancakes, biscuits, fresh fruit and vegetables, gilled chicken. We could go on and on.

We wanted to get away from it all and just relax. Ft. Lewis Lodge was precisely the place to do this.

This place was such a perfect get away. My husband and I stayed at the Riverside House and it was beautiful and clean. We were able to raise our bedroom window and listen to the river flow. So peaceful! The food at the Lodge was amazing! Caryl is an expert cook and we never left hungry! During our stay at Fort Lewis Lodge we rode bikes, canoed, hiked and took short excursions to Hot Springs and Warm Springs, VA. This is a place we will definitely go back to many times.

First visit last weekend (5/18/12). We had an amazing time. Wonderful rooms, food, people and activities. I can't say enough. We didn't want to leave. We were planning our next trip after the first night. They have ping pong, foosball, mountain bikes, tubes and kayaks. The public area with the fireplace is a great way to end the day sitting around talking. They even provide blankets for the chilly evenings. At night take a walk up to the star deck. In the area make sure you visit Goshen Pass. That was a treat. Keep going until you find the public area or the overlook. Also, take the hike up to Flag Rock. What a view. Someone said there are Bald Eagles on the Cowpasture River. We were going to stay at Homestead but I'm so glad we didn't. This was so much better. Don't pass this place up. It's an easy drive from Roanoke.

Room Tip: Cabin or room you can't go wrong.

We have stayed at the Ft Lewis lodge several times and every time we wonder why we wait so long between trips. It is a little over a 3 hour drive from Springfield, VA but once you exit Rt 81 traffic slows down considerably - a very welcome situation. The last 20 miles or so to the lodge are on narrow winding roads but it is a very scenic, relaxing drive and you can feel the stress of northern VA living melting away with each mile. This place is way out in the country so if you are looking for an exciting night life, easy access to major shopping centers, movie theaters, restaurants, etc this is not the place for you. There is decent cell phone coverage at the lodge area but outside that, as you move around Bucks or Highland county, it is hit and miss - which is certainly not a bad thing.

John and Caryl, and their staff, are simply the best and everyone makes you feel right at home. The grounds and facilities are always extremely well kept and the rooms are very comfortable. There are numerous rooms in the lodge itself, and well as 3 unique rooms built in the silo, and then separate cabins. There is another few rooms at a building a mile or so from the main lodge (Riverside House). There is no TV, radio, etc in the rooms, although the Gristmill/dining room has a satellite TV upstairs (if you really want to see TV).

Each day from 1830 until the dinner bell rings (about 1930) John hosts a sort of "happy hour" at the bar on the screened in porch attached to the gristmill/dining room. There are also table and chairs on a deck outside the screened in area, all next to a pond on the property. He has a bowl of snacks to munch on while he serves a beverage of your choice - soda, a variety of wines and Old Dominion lager on tap. It is a great opportunity to meet the other guests, chat about the days activities, and smell what is cooking on the grill for dinner! Drinks are just added to your room tab so you just settle up once at the end of your visit.

All the meals, a full dinner and breakfast, are served in the gristmill, and the food is home made, plentiful and spectacular. Caryl is a fabulous cook and the wait staff are friendly, engaging and excellent at looking after your every need. John and Caryl do not scrimp on the food they serve either. For dinner our first night we had beef tenderloin hot off the grill, crab cakes, green beans, scalloped potatoes, pumpkin muffins, three kinds of salad, and a butterscotch dessert. The second night we had grilled chicken, ham, snap peas, muffins, macaroni salad, green salad, cole slaw, and a sort of peach cobbler for dessert. Breakfasts are served about 0900 and some menu items we had were oatmeal pancakes with VA maple syrup, scrambled eggs, egg & cheese casserole, sausage, bacon, fruit, cereal, biscuits, etc. The food is simply excellent.

There is a beautiful open air pavillion next to the lodge where you can relax in front of a roaring fire in the evening, visit with new found friends, stargaze, play ping pong or foosball. Upstairs in the gristmill is a satellite TV and a pool table. They have bikes you can use, maps for hiking trails, a canoe, kayaks and inner tubes for use on the very nearby Cowpasture River, etc. You can also swim or fish for trout or bass in the river as well. They have a hot tub available as well.

There are lots of state parks in the area for outdoor activities like biking, fishing, hiking, etc. The Homestead Resort in Hot Springs are not far away, as are some other mineral bath type places, and beautiful golf courses. You can drive around to some of the smaller towns and explore the shops with local crafts, etc. There is some interesting wildlife in the area as well, like bald eagles. For an incredible view on a nice day, make sure to get to Ingalls Overlook on Rt 39 near Goshen.

Some may think a stay here is expensive, and admittedly it is not cheap, but I believe if you factor in what you are getting for your money (meals, facilities, recreation, service, etc) it should be considered a good value.

If you are looking for a place to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city and really relax in the country for a few days, this is the place for you. The Ft Lewis Lodge is a real treasure, and the folks who run it are all determined to ensure you have a great time while sharing their facilities. We have stayed in B&Bs all over the US and in Europe, and this place is in the top 5 - outstanding.

A real treasure...our first visit...a beautiful serene lodge located in the beautiful Virginia mountains...offering nice accommodations, peaceful environment and wonderfully delicious meals. For the fly fisherman...the grounds offers great trout and small mouth bass fishing on 3 miles of the Cowpasture River. We will see many more trips to this wonderful retreat.

Room Tip: The lodge itself offers small but adequate rooms. There are several cabins that offer larger accomm...

Bucolic setting in the mountains of western Bath County, Virginia. Absolutely spectacular setting: lovely mountain backdrop to a lush green valley farm with the Cowpasture River running through the property. The property is well-maintained: the cabins are very cozy, clean, nicely appointed, comfortable beds and quiet. Everything about the Lodge is warm and inviting and very service oriented. The meals (breakfast and dinner) are delicious, served buffet style, a "happy hour" before the evening meal, very casual attire. The owners/hosts couldn't be nicer or more friendly.
The Silo steps to the third floor are challenging for those concerned about heights and I would think twice before accepting that room. Rooms 1 & 2 in the Silo are great. The Lodge rooms are very nice and the Cabins are even more cozy and private - we'll request a Cabin on our return visit. The section of river is privately stocked with trout but the rocks are VERY slippery when wading- be careful and a wading staff / felt bottom boots are needed.
There is no town of any size nearby therefore one must enjoy the rustic setting and nature - just 'chilling out'...

What a wonderful and special place this is! The kind of natural beauty that is hard to find in America today, a wide, green valley, gorgeous mountains, peace. The rooms are charming and comfortable with plenty of additional places to talk, play games, read, or just look out the big windows. And the food, wow! Unpretentious yet really special. Nice people seem to stay here, too. And the prices are remarkably reasonable. No wonder guests keep coming back.
