“"Caveat" the Hayloft!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 9, 2010

All others have given this lovely estate a terrific review. I agree with virtually all of those reviews to a point. The grounds are lovely and there is an air of the horse country set that is not dissimilar from Bruern Stables in the Cotswolds, my all time favorite small luxury "farm" or stables hotel. The Hayloft room is very very small, very tight, with virtually no place to sit comfortably. True, it has an enormous deck but if it is cold or rains, it's confining. The room turned out to be more than $650. per night, because there is a hefty service charge, plus, tax, plus local charges, exceeing 20% of the total posted cost. . For that price I expect perfect linens and a clean and roomy respite. The room and accoutrements were just adquate. I certainly expected that the carpets would be clean for this price. They were not. I am attaching photos. They were solied and stained.

The deck cushions were strewn all over and covered with pine needles and dust from the trees when we arrived (and there were old cigarette butts in the sand container there. No one made an attempt to make the deck inviting or set up for a newly arriving guest, although it would have been so easy. The absence of coffee or tea on the large sideboard during the day and evening in the main lobby, particularly in the early morning is a serious oversight.. There is wine available in the lobby and a half bottle in the room, from the Napa Valley . There was a dearth throughout the Estate and restaurant of local wines.

The pool is advertised as heated for Spring but the temperature in the water was in the high 60's, way too cold to swim in the cool air--

Overall, I would go back again, but I would select a far lower price room, in The French or Dutch Cottages or even the Spring House.Ask for the square footages of the rooms when you book and never book the Hayloft. The price for the Hayloft should be markeldy reduced-- by about $200. to be remotely fair. Even then, except for the deck, which is too large for 2 people, the room woudl not be a winner in my mind.

The management is a bit pretentious and disorganized at times. They indicate they have a spa, but they if fact do not have a fully service spa. Services are from a day spa in town and are cursory at best, and there is no lovely formal space that serves that role yet. Apparently it is in the making.

These flaws are surmountable if the management takes them seriously, but many small luxuriy hotels are far more inviting and impeccable. Ths one has a way to go. The grounds--totally spectacular! The restaurant was superb. Overall, this seems to have a novice management team with good intent and one thing I would recommend most highly is to let people know that the Hayloft is not the best room, up a very steep set of stairs, under the eaves, and is sinmply never going to be prime.

Goodstone Inn is a luxurious inn that combines beautiful accomodations with going to great lengths to maintain the environment upon which it was built. I have stayed in the Stallion Suite and the Bull Barn. They are very luxurious yet maintain the rustic feel and the bullbarn even have the gates that surrounded the bulls. The whole property is beautiful only to be matched by a wonderful staff and service that begins the moment you enter the property. You are greeted by one of the managing staff that orients you to the property, its amenities and food service. You are escorted to your accomodation. There is a beautiful afternoon tea each day that has tea, alcoholic beverages, soft drinks and snack items. The accomodations are amazing. The linens, mattresses and room amenities are phenomenal. Breakfast and dinner are culinary extravaganzas. Chef Walden is an experienced chef with many years experience at L'Auberge Chez Francois. He goes to great length to provide a menu that is rich in home grown and fresh ingredients. His Alsacian onion tart, fresh mushrooms, main courses and desserts including the option of souffles are as amazing as the beautiful, romantic restaurant is. Breakfast was equally a special treat with wonderful eggs benedict, pancakes which were fluffy and wonderfully fresh squeezed juices. The chef makes all of the breads for breakfast and dinner and what was truly special was that the foods that were needing to be hot were hot and the cold items were truly cold. The chef pays closes attention to a wonderfully tasty dish that is presented and garnished beautifully. There is a wonderful swimming pool and hot tub for relaxation and to enjoy the sunThe Goodstone Inn is a wonderful place to relax in a rustic yet luxurious setting, to celebrate special occasions or to have a beautiful event. This was my second visit and I cant wait to go back!

We stayed with friends in The Dutch House and it was a great way to start our holiday in Virginia having flown into Dulles airport, Washington. Perfect setting, peace and quite and everything you need. Great breakfasts!

Arrived to find tea and snacks being served around an inviting fire in the Cottage House fire place. Spent the next couple of hours unwinding and staring out at the beautiful views from the windows. Checked in, changed for dinner and then took our seats at a window side table. For a little over two hours we were treated to an awesome pace of service and dinner menu that didn't disappoint thru any of the courses. The next day was spent walking the grounds and hiking trails. The whole time experience was unbelievable and we've already planned our next trip back.

Highlights: Views, Fireplace, Mare Suite, French Onion Soup and Wine List.

Lowlights: Not having another day to spend there.

Our stay was the result of a gift that allowed us to stay for a couple of nights and included dinner one evening. The staff was very attentive, the food and wine were excellent and the accommodations were lovely. We stayed in the Spring House, which is a self contained facility with a fully equipped kitchen including a great coffee maker. The main house has a big stone fireplace where we spent most of a rainy Saturday reading. We initially thought the cost was high but after shopping around, their prices are not out of line with other B&B's in the area.

Beautiful setting, beautifully appointed rooms, superb service, delicious food! We went mid-week and got a B&B rate of $199/night, and that represented incredible value given that everything was just about perfect. The breakfast was fabulous, and the price includes afternoon tea with goodies. The dining room probably has the best food in the whole region. We had a two-bedroom cottage (the Dutch Cottage) all to ourselves. Each cottage has a complete kitchen setup. Would be ideal for families, wedding parties, and corporate retreats. This hotel greatly exceeded our expectations.

This beautiful estate is 10 minutes by bicycle from historic Middleburg. It is comprised of over 200 acres of lush, rolling, green space in an incredibly bucolic and peaceful setting. We had planned to bike to local wineries and enjoy the restaurant and accomodations after our wine tastings. We found that the rolling hills pushed our limit in terms of bike riding (!), but were more than happy to stay in our beautiful room in the French Cottage - complete with toile linens, a wood-burning fireplace, and beamed ceinlings. The setting provided for the MOST relaxing weekend! We were obligated to either walk or bike to the main cottage (a historic barn/stable converted to lovely reception, restaurant and sitting area), and were enthralled with our walk after dinner under a moonlit night with all stars alight to our cottage. The dinner - one of the best we have ever had (and we are real foodies - French Laundry, et al) was sublime with absolute PERFECT wine pairings. We were perfectly satiated.....This truly was one of our most memorable times away - and we have had many - enjoying the highest MIchelin rated restaurants and accomodations...This will give you a TRULY relaxing weekend...unwind....eat well.....relax...We look forward to our next visit!
