“From strength to strength.... a venue for many occasions”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 7, 2013

We were never people who returned year after year to any venue, no matter how good, until we found Seatoller House in the early '80s. Its charm and unique format just hooked us; what's more, it hooked our then young children who immediately rated it a venue of choice when asked for their holiday suggestions - and who have continued to visit by themselves. Over the years the House has never lost its charm. We have been privileged to watch the House develop through 4 management teams, each one adding their own innovations and improvements whilst respecting what the nature of the House and the guests who visit. Whether just holidaying or holding special family parties there, the welcome has always been warm from house staff and guests alike. Tricia and Nigel continue the best traditions of the house whilst bringing their own calm and welcoming atmosphere. If you want to hide in a corner and choose your own menu, Seatoller House is possibly not for you. If you like conversing and meeting interesting people from diverse occupations around a communal dining table: if you like staying in an old house full of character: if you like one of the Lakes quieter and more picturesque areas - then Seatoller House is most likely a place you will enjoy, or even become addicted to. Tricia is a worthy custodian of the Seatoller House reputation for good food. Her fixed menu (adaptable for guests with dietary requirements) saves the mental energy of choosing which is best diverted to selecting a glass/ bottle from Nigel's interesting wine list. The guestbook in the lounge provides testament to the continued enjoyment of visitors...... and in some cases their canine companions.

We sort of selected Seatoller House by mistake, best mistake we ever made! The hospitality was brilliant the room I had "Ospray" far exceeded my expectations. I have a limit of 200 characters, so all I will say about the food is thanks Trish quality & quantity perfect.
When the team (we are doing 3 Peaks for cancer charities in Sept) got back to the office Monday all the talk was about Seatoller and not the hike up the hill.
Recommend a stay to anyone, only thing I would suggest is book more than one night dinner B&B not to be disappointed.

Room Tip: Ospray is a good option

Seatoller House has to be one of me and my girlfriend's favourite places in the world!

We have had the pleasure of spending a lot of time there over many trips, and I am ashamed to say I have only just thought to write a well-deserved public recommendation. The Borrowdale Valley has to be one of the most beautiful couple of square miles in the whole of the UK, and Seatoller house is placed perfectly for anyone wishing to discover the wonders of what Alfred Wainwright describes as “the loveliest square mile in the district”.

My girlfriend and I have been visiting Borrowdale for a number of years, including using any of our special dates such as Birthdays, Anniversaries, Bank Holiday Weekends as an excuse to visit. For the last 2 years we have stayed at Seatoller House where we, and our basset-hound puppy Yoko are made to feel more than welcome and well and truly waiting on hand and foot for everything you can possibly wish for by Nigel and Trish. Due to word count on this review, below are just two of the many examples of their exceptional hospitality:

For my girlfriends Birthday which is in the summer they helped put together a surprise Champagne on ice reception for us and her family.
For my Birthday they cooked the perfect evening meal and supplied great wine.

The food is of brilliant, both breakfast and evening dinner. Very, very impressed!  Breakfast and Dinner is situated in a lovely dining room with lots of character, wine can be pre-ordered for dinner. At breakfast you can see red squirrels and birds feeding just outside the window. After dinner you can retire to a lounge and library with open fire to enjoy a drink or two and sample Trish’s home-made chocolate truffles  There is a self-service honesty bar offering everything you could want, including Jennings Ale on Draught. Packed lunches can be pre-ordered in the evening ready for you next morning as you go out on your walks .. And for those of you who need to stay digitally connected when in the Lakes where phone-signal can be elusive, complimentary in-house wi-fi is perfect.

Honestly, we can’t sing Seatoller House and their staff praises high enough. We look forward to every visit and are always sad to leave. Hope you get to enjoy it as much as we do. I have also attached a photo of the perfect view you have from their garden where you can sit, relax and have a nice drink while looking at the beautiful scenary after a long day walking.

Stayed in this beautiful house for the easter weekend, the food was brilliant as always and Nigel and Trish were always there if any questions needed to be answered. Just fantastic. Set in the beautiful mountains of the lake district the view from outside your window was phenomenal. Overall a great weekend with some great people

I stayed for two nights during a flying visit to Walk and Mountain Bike. Fantastic picturesque location with heaps of tradition makes this hotel a must if you are staying in the area. The Hotel has its own drying room and lock up for bikes which is ideal. WIFI throughout the hotel is beneficial to keep in touch with the world as much, or as little, as you want. I stayed in Osprey, the room is very spacious and has been recently redecorated to a high standard. The warm welcome from Nigel with his ‘can’t do enough for you’ attitude, the three fantastic meals a day cooked by Trish and the honesty system for drinks just add to the overall ambience of the hotel. Looking forward to my return stay in September! Can’t recommend it enough.

I didn't have any expectations when I arrived at seatoller house but if I had then it would be fair to say they would have been exceeded! I booked myself 3 nights dinner bed and breakfast but ended up staying for 5.

First of all the location is fantastic for fell walkers like myself. Easy access to various walks from the front door, and the bus stop is just over the road if you fancy going anywhere for the day.

The rooms are kept to a high standard of cleanliness and offer great views of the surrounding area. All of the rooms have a bathroom, whether it's en-suite , or just down the hall as mine was (I stayed in 'owl').

The food was outstanding. Seatoller house operates a 'communal' dinner which i really enjoyed. it gives you the chance to get to know other guests and, as i found, learn about the area and walks i wouldn't have known about otherwise. There was fresh homemade bread (still warm) on the table every evening along with an excellent wine menu. I enjoyed a 3 coarse meal, followed by a local cheeseboard and then coffee and chocolates in the lounge area.

The lounge and bar provided an ideal retreat after a hard days walking. Every night i would help myself to a drink and relax in front of the fire with the other guests, exchanging stories from the day.

Nigel and Trisha (the managers/chef) along with the other staff provide excellent service, are friendly and will cater to most, if not all of your needs.

All together seatoller house ticks all the boxes and I will definitely be returning, hopefully sooner rather than later.

A memorable stay at a spacious and very welcoming guest house set in a very picturesque location. Nigel and Trish are lovely and the rooms - we stayed in The Osprey - are massive. A home-cooked English breakfast was great and the honesty bar was well-supplied and well-used. Would recommend it to anyone looking for a country getaway and will definitely return.
