Drove from where we were staying in Mt. Airy after seeing the mill on TripAdvisor and discovering it was less than an hour from here. The drive was just beautiful, very winding and hairpin curves but it seemed like we were there in no time! We were there by 10:30 so it wasn't too crowded yet and I was able to get some beautiful pictures! It was quite chilly last night so there were icicles hanging and it was just so pretty with the sun shining so brightly! We toured the different buildings and then headed up the parkway to Chateau Morrisette Winery which was a spectacularly beautiful winery!

What a beautiful place. We stopped and walked around maybe 30 minutes. Government shut down, so the restaurant wasn't open :( Not many people.

We had a cloudy raining day on our visit but this made the drive on the Blue Ridge Parkway worth the trip. Even in the rain the mill was beautiful and the October colors only enhanced the photos. You will want to walk around the paths and see all the exhibits. Lots of people so make sure you respect the view of others taking photos. The restaurant on site is well worth the wait. So even if you can't get a view of the mountains you can always get a view of history at the mill.

This is an interesting stop to see how difficult life was back in the good old days. There is a weaver using a loom, grist mill, farm inplements, etc. It is a nice stop on the parkway to stretch your legs.
It is also a free attraction. Allow about 15 minutes. Since the government shutdown, it was nice to have something open along the parkway. Bathrooms were still closed, however.
