“Stay Somewhere Else”
Reviewed November 26, 2007

First, we stayed at Hotel 5 so we can't say that all of the properties at the resort are the same way.

We reserved two adjoining rooms through the Massanutten resort reservation system (telephone reservations) - one room with a King bed and sofa bed, the other with two double beds and a rollaway bed.

Check-in has to be done through the Woodstone Meadows building, which is about 3 miles from the hotel. As the area near the building was undergoing road construction, it was tricky to find it. Then the hotel guests are lower priority than the condo/timeshare guests as there was one person working the hotel line and half a dozen working the condo/timeshare line (same desk area).

After check-in comes the hard part of trying to find the right hotel building, as the buildings are spread throughout the resort. As all of the hotel buildings look identical at night,it was difficult to find Hotel 5 (next to the conference center).

We did receive adjoining rooms, but the door adjoining the two we could not get to stay open.

Now the truly disgusting part - arriving in the room we discovered a large blood stain on the King bed. Calling the front desk (Woodstone Meadows) they indicated they couldn't get us a new room but "would take this problem into conference." One hour later and a new bedspread and sheets arrived, but we were told we had to make the bed ourselves. The bed was very uncomfortable and our guests in the adjoining room told us the rollaway bed was more comfortable than the double beds.

There was no place to eat breakfast anywhere nearby so we were on our own to find a place in town.

The blood stain just proved that their maid service is lacking (who knows what problems were not noticeable?) and the comfort of the room was subpar. There appear to be far better hotels minutes away from the resort.

We stayed here in April 2006 as a stress-relieving get-away.

The room was okay, but not the nicest. Everything was clean, but older & a little worn. We stayed in the rooms really close to the ski slopes. We were able to see the other rooms & suites on the resort and were much more impressed with them. The rooms did have a really nice set of toiletries that we used.

There were GORGEOUS views. And everything was peaceful and very private. We came on a weekend & it was as though we had the place to ourselves.

We arrived late at night & the staff was very accomodating. Everyone we met was friendly & helpful.

We enjoyed the pool, although it was indoors. We also liked the sports courts. But most of all: the spa was awesome. They have modestly priced massages & facials and both were enjoyable and top quality.

We also really enjoyed the water park. It is huge with many water slides, a wave pool, a cool surfing simulator, hot tubs...
We've been back several times!

There are lots of activities at the resort and it's in a super-easy day trip distance to Washington DC, Charlottesville, Harrisonburg, Shenandoah...

We've yet to ski here, but we're coming back :)

We went to Massanutten Mountainside Villas on a RCI "last call
We have been to different areas of Massanutten many times - it is one of our favorite places to stay. The Mountainside Villas are very pleasant - I really did like the layout. The only complaint with the unit itself was that the jacuzzi tub is smaller than the ones in the Woodside or Summit buildings. Also there were outside steps to the complex to get in and out which my husband didnt like!!

We had dinner at Fareways one night - that was just okay
Dinner at the buffet in the waterpark was great - we ate there twice. We bought activity cards ($99 each) - mine I think I saved about 125., my husband definately got his moneys worth. He has decided he LOVES to golf, so received great discounts there along with everything I saved. We went horseback riding which was nice - the guides were very pleasant, and the trail good. Went to the waterpark 3 days, which we always enjoy.

The Jason Bishop Magic show was really surprizingly good, the Tuesday night comedy show was pretty good also. The Craft fair was as pleasant and informative as always. We were there in time to do the scenic chair lift ride which we have enjoyed in the past and were once again NOT disappointed. Mini golf onsite was good. The activity card included admission to the Frontier Culture Museum which is really great, except we got mixed in with about 400 schoolchildren on field trips - bad timing!! The card also included the Hall of Valor and New Market battlefield site - this was our first time visiting the site and were very pleased with it. The card also includes admission to Shenandoah Caverns - but we were just there a few months ago, so did not visit this trip. Drove along Skyline Drive instead, stopping at many beautiful spots along the way.

The pool and hottub at LeClub Rec center was closed for maintenance for the week that we were there - so we had to drive down the mountain to the Woodstone Rec center to use the pool and hottub. Both are very nice, not crowded at all this time of year. Same for the game room and exercise rooms - most times we were the only ones there except for 3-4 others. There are many things to do onsite and offsite that this is where we end up at least twice a year - usually bringing others with us. This trip it was just the 2 of us.

For major shopping Harrisonburg is a great place - many stores, including my new favorite - "Books-a-Million" - I hope I have that right!!

We had a horrible experience and we hope our messages in the future will tell ownership to hire better read on... We went through the Tour (free) 3 night stay (timeshare oppurtunity. We had a respectable experience with the tour guide, but had a horrible experience with management. They try and belittle you, not taking no for an answer. It was our first time going through these so called Timeshare Tours for the free night stay. We will NOT be going back and we will tell everyone we know that Massanutten is not the place to go. Going to Wintergreen instead in the future.

We found the staff to be unhelpful (best descriptor allowable on this website). We went for a 'sales tour' and found the pricing to be, well, suspect. We were disappointed in the Waterpark (check out Great Wolf Lodge in Williamsburg if that's your interest). The accomodations, while having a beautiful view, were nowhere near the RCI goldcrown level that we have come to expect (for example you share a washer/dryer in a common area in the Woodstone which is supposed to be the 'best and newest' available - unless you have both the upstairs and downstairs) of the unit. The one highpoint was that the jacuzzi in the unit was really nice, and there were 2 water heaters in the unit so there was plenty of hot water. The pool at the sales center was nice, but you're definitely in a fishbowl making it uncomfortable for us. The pool at Le Club was big and there were a lot of amenities, but we found things to be in poor general repair. The area is beautiful, but if you're looking for the quality of staffing, amenities, and accomodations normally at gold crown, we'd suggest you keep looking.

My husband and I stayed here in October 2007. We are in our late 30s-early 40s and are an active couple--we like to do things on our vacation.

We stayed in a Grenoble Summit upper unit. The actual room itself was very large and well appointed, and clean when we arrived. There is an "honorary" non-smoking policy which means they ask you not to smoke in the room, but you can if you want to. We don't smoke, but the people downstairs from us did and we could smell it which was a negative.

We are RCI owners and have stayed in many resorts and this one was surprising to us. First of all, they don't do a mid-week cleaning like most other resorts do. If you want a cleaning, you have to pay.

You want internet access and have your own computer? $56 week or $10/day. Or you can use their computers for $.35 minute.

Want to attend any of the activities on the resort? Prepare to pay.

Basically, anything you want to do at this resort, account for additional money into your travel budget because you will have to pay.

Also, we had to tell them several times that we did not want to attend a presentation, and they kept bothering us. We stopped answering the phone.

The resort is really too far to do any kind of sightseeing to keep you busy for a week. It is about 2.5 hours one-way from Jamestown, Washington DC, Colonial Williamsburg and Baltimore.

The Shenendoah National Park and Skyline Drive was 20 miles away. That was beautiful at this time of the year. Costs $15 to get in--but your pass is good for 7 days.

We went to Monticello, which is about 1 hour away. $15 per person to see the house, which was a total ripoff. You can only be inside of the house during a tour, and our guide wasn't that interested in answering questions. We were very disappointed.

The nearest town, Harrisonburg, is about 15 minutes away. They have a movie theatre there, grocery stores, and a mall. Also, James Madison University is there.

All in all, will not stay there again.

This is a true ‘resort’. It's great for kids: kiddie pools, kids activities ($), playgrounds, full game rooms ($), go carts ($). They have daycare so you can do things on your own: golf ($), driving range ($), full spa ($), craft classes ($), full gym. They have things to do together: hiking trails, nice clean pools, parks, horseback riding ($). Everything is clean and well-maintained. Our unit was a 2 bedroom and had enough room for 2 people and a baby. Unit was brand new.
Bottom line: Gold Crown is well deserved.
Best thing about the resort: activities, the grounds, the units.
Quick Tips/Suggestions:
Best things nearby: Harrisonburg, shopping, dining, children’s museum. Shenandoah National Park, scenic skyline drive, deer, lodge (restaurant is not recommended).

Waterpark was very expensive, and a good thing to do if the weather is bad. Recommend multi-day pass.

A great resort for the summer or winter, not that good for spring or fall.
