Owner description: The Old City Cemetery, established in 1806, is one of the oldest public cemeteries in the United States still in use today. Mayors and other prominent civic leaders, along with the city's indigent and "strangers," are among the estimated 18,000 people buried here. Two thirds of those interred here are of African descent, both enslaved and free. The cemetery's Confederate section contains the graves of more than 2,200 soldiers from 14 states. Museums on the property interpret the diverse history of this rehabilitated graveyard and its inhabitants. Today, Old City Cemetery is the most visited historic site in the City of Lynchburg and is Central Virginia's most unique public garden. It is a Virginia Historic Landmark on the National Register of Historic Places.

“Wedding and multiple visits since!”
Reviewed November 25, 2013

My daughter was married in the chapel on this property! I have since returned on several occassions to walk the grounds. It is a "lovely" place and so well kept! Certainly worth visiting. Plan to spend time taking it all in! I have lived in Lynchburg many years (30+ years) and missed this hidden "gem" until getting involved in my daughters wedding plans.

“A soulful piece of history”
Reviewed September 3, 2013

It is a memorable place. We parked in a street of flowering crepe myrtles and strolled slowly down the hill through the large, grassy cemetery. behind the trees was the real treasure: row upon row of weathered gravestones, many draped proudly with small Confederate flags.

“Neat old cemetery”
Reviewed August 5, 2013

This is a neat old cemetery which has graves dating back to the Revolutionary War. It has a large Confederate Soldier portion with a few Union soldiers buried there as well. It also has interpretive buildings on the edges with recordings to give you more info.
