Description: Located in the heart of one of the oldest neighborhoods in the country, Mangia is the cornerstone of historic Rivermont Avenue. The rustic Italian fare, extensive wine list, local artwork and convivial setting inspire a dining experience that is at once luscious and relaxed while allowing a family style feast. People watch on the Café, have an intimate dinner in the candle lit interior or lounge to the mellow live acoustics in the bar. Our chalkboard changes daily with local and organic specials or Italian classics. We invite you in as family; to share the very best we have to offer, on your terms.

“Simple food, but good”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 18, 2014 via mobile

Price was good. $8 menu before 3:30pm. Not much selection other than sandwiches, salad, & pasta. Nothing I couldn't make at home. It was good and we had a very large group & they handled us really great! The house Chardonnay was good.

“Great food, slow service”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 16, 2014

The food here is delicious no matter what you get. They often have live local music on the weekends, something casual that you can listen to while you eat. They have several good beer choices and many more great wines. There's a nice outdoor seating area too. All that said, the service is incredibly slow. Plan to take at least 2 hours, even for lunch when they're not busy.

“Wonderful Celebration Dinner”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 9, 2014

If you're wondering where in Lynchburg you can wear a dress and celebrate something special, this is it.

We went around 7:30 and were treated to unexpected live music - singing and piano. The lady that was playing chose some covers and what I believe could have been original songs. We were there with about 5 or so other people and everyone clapped at the end of songs. It was charming and entertaining.

Value: This is a place that you could easily spend 100$, but if you choose wisely, you can get away with a light supper and wine for ~30$ for two.

I had a wonderful white wine varietal (all their wines seem to have the Denominazione di origine controllata, Controlled Designation of Origin certifications, if you're into that sort of thing), with four antipasti - sopressata, two mozzerallas and another cheese that was pretty mild. You also get bread and olive oil with tapenade. For dinner I had a half plate of pasta (I was pretty full by that time but I kept eating because it was so delicious!), the pasta was arugula penne with roasted tomatos and pine nuts in olive oil. It was a bit bitter (but healthy!) due to the arugula, but the tomato made up for it. For dessert, I had the espresso chocolate cake. My dinner date had chicken wrapped in prosciutto with a wine sauce and a side of pesto pasta. For dessert he had lemon sorbet. We traded bites and it was AMAZING!

All told, we walked out of there for 70$ not including tip.

As for service, the waitress was charming and attentive.

The ambience of Mangia is really the reason to come, it's the sort of Italian restaurant that's the opposite of Olive Garden. It has an authenticity that you wouldn't otherwise get from Milano's for example (not that there's anything wrong with either of those places). We sat at a window with a gorgeous view of Randolph college (sort of like Hogwarts from Harry Potter) at sunset. It was gorgeous. The art on the wall seems like it's from local artists. The tables are not crammed on top of each other to maximize profit. This seems like the kind of place you can linger.

We've eaten outside before, and had the misfortune to come when the deliveries were being made, so we got to stare at and listen to a huge diesel truck. Usually the outside seating is wonderful however, and it gets packed early during the spring and summer.

“Great neighborhood restaurant”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 4, 2014

This is one of our "go to" places. If you like garlic, you will love Mangia. The food is always good, made with fresh/ local ingredients with nightly specials and half portions available, so not outrageously priced for an excellent meal. There is outdoor dining which is great when the weather is nice.
