Prospect Hill Plantation Inn

We have travelled and stayed with friends many times in Inns that are listed in Select Registry and Prospect Hill didn't come up to standard in our view. The location of this old inn is ideal and we were very aware that this was an old historic inn but on being shown our rooms and dining areas we were struck with how shabby and faded the place felt in side. In our view it was really in need of some attention and in need of some kind of lift as it felt as though it had no life in the place. It wasn't that the place wasn't clean. In our room it was the small things that weren't right - one of the curtains was hung back to front, we had a flask of hot water but no mugs or anything to make a coffee in. On the positive said there was a pile of fluffy white towels in the room. We were also surprised that there were no room keys and particularly with some of the cabins that are in the grounds. The bathrooms were in need of some updating.

We love our food and the evening meal was really overated and not worth the money. We certainly wouldn't have made the drive out to Prospect Hill for a romantic evening meal if we hadn't have been staying there. The breakfasts were also very disappointing and didn't meet the standard that we have had in the past particularly for the price that we paid for our stay there.

There may have been a time when Propsect Hill was on top form but in our opinion it is in need of some attention if it is to maintain its position as the place to stay and eat in Charlottesville. We know we visited out of season but that shouldn't be any reason for the standard that we experienced.

I was looking for a bed and breakfast that offered dinner too.

This would allow us to stay on the premise and just chill without having to worry about finding a place to eat.

The food was creative and delicious.

There was a fireplace in our room which was very nice as it was frigid outside.

The cabin was decorated to reflect the building, which was constructed in the 1600s,

Yes, I highly recommend Prospect Hill and am planning my summer trip, so I can go on wine tours and see Monticello again.

This October was our 11th year in a row staying at Prospect Hill Plantation Inn. We celebrate our wedding anniversary here each year and can't imagine going anywhere else. We have tried a variety of rooms, including inside the main Inn and the outer cottages. The staff is friendly and helpful; meals are outstanding! The Owner is very present and shares many interesting stories about the Plantation and the surrounding area. It is the perfect home base for the various area attractions. We intend to return again next year and wouldn't change a thing! The perfect getaway!!

I stayed for 3 nights and wished I could have stayed for more. The inn is located in a beautiful setting and is so restful and peaceful. The room and sitting room reminded me of being at a special grandmother's house. The inn is very clean and the innkeepers and employees have thought of many special touches such as a refrigerator in the room with free bottles of water and soft drinks - real half and half for the coffee you can make in your room, fresh fruit everyday, peanuts, crackers, homebaked cookies, a small bottle of wine with an opener and glasses and wonderful robes. The bed was very comfortable. The location is an easy drive to Charlottesville, VA. The innkeeper, Bill, is a wonderful man and we enjoyed talking to him and his staff. The food was a 10.

No matter what review is given about Prospect Hill; please at least try one of their five course dinners. They are amazing! My husband and I like to think of ourselves as foodies, and prospect hill's dinner is one of the best I have ever had. We have celebrated birthdays, anniversary's, date nights, and family gatherings at these fabulous dinners. It may be expensive, but as at 25 year old, it is well worth it.

We booked early this inn strictly from its photos on the website. Then only afterwards did I remember to check it out on Tripadvisor's. And then I got really worried about this place. Don't be.

We had a magical, wonderful and relaxing stay there. This beatiful inn has wonderful grounds, interesting rooms, a very hospitable owner and a friendly staff. The elegant dinner served to us was delicious with good local Virginia wines. The breakfast was a delicious omelette with fresh fruit and served in the dining room of the main house. They also offer breakfast in your room if you wanted it that way.

We are in Viriginia wine country and we are conveniently close to Monticello but not with all the crowds. We got to stay in a c.1699 log cabin. It was really authentic but not spooky. For us, San Franciscans, this was pretty special.

We hope to come back.

First, the positives: We arrived late for dinner -- called en route -- due to heavy traffic in DC and they let us start the dinner service late. The wait staff during dinner both nights were helpful, friendly and professional. The prayer before dinner (the second night) is a nice way to show how grateful we are in this country. That's it for the plus column.

Otherwise, we are shocked this is a select registry Inn.
The Room -- room did not look like pictures on the web-site, furniture had been moved around, and carpet, etc is in bad need of repair/refresh. Everything needed cleaning...particularly the bathroom. We weren't told anything about the room, and there was no information book in the room, windows (inside) were filled with bugs
Dinner -- They call it Fine Dinning...in our opinion, it is not fine dining. The first night it was pork and was average at best...we thought perhaps it was because we were a little late, so we'd give it a second try -- no luck, it was worse (even though it is a was holiday and a Saturday) Very disappointing.
Breakfast...average

Wouldn't recommend anyone to stay here, especially at the prices they charge. Would recommend Select Registry re-think having their sign of approval on this place -- makes them look bad, definitely will make me think twice about a Select Registry Inn in the future, where in the past that was an instant seal of approval for me.
