“A great place for a little history lesson for our boys.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 29, 2013 via mobile

Unassuming cemetery with lots of old headstones. Sparked some questions from our teenagers. If in Lexington, it's a quick stop to add to your list. I would recommend the Lexington Visitors Center whose staff was very helpful as we're all of the walking tour maps etc they provided.

“Final resting place of General Jackson and many others.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 19, 2013 via mobile

As any cemetery, it is a very solemn and tranquil place. Jackson's burial spot is located centrally under his statue.
Lying nearby is his aide Sandie Pendleton and his father who was Jackson's chief artillerist. Interesting stop.

“History in review”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 11, 2013

We stopped at the cemetery prior to continuing on our vacation. This is definitely a place to visit, especially with school age children. We can teach about American history but walking through this cemetery and seeing the comments on the grave markers as well as the historical aspects bring history to life.

“Stonewall's final resting place”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 9, 2013

Perhaps it is ironic that, in the tiny Shenandoah hamlet of Lexington, Virginia, Robert E. Lee is buried at one end of town and Thomas J. "Stonewall" Jackson is buried at the other end, two of greatest names in the military history of the United States, two legendary figures of the American Civil War. Jackson, who was killed in 1863 after the battle of Chancellorsville, is buried in Stonewall Jackson Memorial Cemetery on South Main Street, a short walk from downtown and Lee Chapel, Lee's final resting place. Originally, he was buried in a family plot. But the remains of his wife and children were later reinterred under a large statue in the center of the cemetery. The old headstones still can be found in the old plot nearby. Frequently, visitors leave lemons at the foot of the statue. Jackson was said to suck on lemons during battle though the story was never substantiated and cemetery personnel quickly dispose of the fruit. Jackson isn't the only luminary buried in the cemetery. There are two Virginia governors, including John Letcher, who was in office during the Civil War. Also Margaret Junkin Preston, described as "Poetess of the Confederacy." There also are 296 Confederate veterans, including Sandie Pendleton, who was Jackson's chief of staff, and his father, who was Lee's chief of artillery.

“Well Maintained Old Cemetery”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 4, 2013

Just a short walk from downtown Lexington, the main draw to this little cemetery is Stonewall Jackson's grave as well as the family's original plot/burial location. The city takes good care of the grounds and it is quite a quaint little spot.
