“Cold greeting but rest of stay good”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 17, 2013 via mobile

We had a disappointing start to our stay at Keswick...after a friendly greeting by the doorman things went down hill. We stood in the lobby and the young lady at the desk never greeted us until we spoke first. We said that we were a bit early (3:30) for a 4:00 check-in. She said our room was not ready (understandable) gave us a preregistration card and took our phone number to call when the room was ready. Never said here is a map of the property, or volunteered any information whatsoever. In fact, she only responded with short answers to direct questions. So we left the property to visit a nearby winery and to await the call .... 5:00 received a message. Not a great start.

The room was lovely,as was the grounds, the rest of the staff was friendly during the days we stayed. When we returned the room keys upon departure, we were very pleased with the cheerful demeanor and helpful attitude of another young lady -- better ending, unfortunately the start left us with a sour note.

If you've ever wondered what it feels like to live like the uber-wealthy on a fabulous country estate nestled in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, Keswick Hall will show you. It's perfectly situated to explore Charlottesville, Monticello and a lot of the best wineries in the region and by spring, will have its new golf course up and running. After a day of exploring, we sat on our balcony of historic Suite 9 (formerly the master suite of the privately owned Villa Crawford) and listened to the birds and the romantic sound of the train whistle as it rolled by on the nearby tracks. The food is fabulous and anyone can dine at Fosset's (make a reservation!) and you can also attend events like the annual Christmas tree lighting or special wine dinners without being a guest. This is a historic property that dates back to 1912, so if you're expecting giant bathrooms and closets like the previous reviewer wanted, head into town and stay at a chain hotel. However, if you enjoy the serenity and charm of an earlier era when we were not all plugged in 24/7 and could actually relax and enjoy nature, Keswick Hall is well worth the splurge!

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a private balcony to enjoy the stunning mountain views.

Thank you for your review! We are delighted that you enjoyed so many aspects of your stay, including your historic room and the charm of the train rolling by in the distance. We hope that you will return again when the golf course redesing by Pete Dye has been completed.

I attended a conference at Keswick Hall, my first visit there. Keswick I just outside Charlottesville, Virginia. It has the look and feel of an old manor and/or club. A friend called it similar to the Boar's Head, and that would be a good comparison, for many reasons. Like the Boar's Head, it has been around a while, apparently. The dining is above average. If one lived in Charlottesville, it would be a place to come just to eat. The grounds are "nice." They are not atypical of properties in the mountains, and while there they were either building or redoing the golf course. Thus, while it was a wreck, one can see past that to what the end will/might be. While the public areas were comfortable, well-furnished, and very country inn, the rooms need a lot of work. My room smelled like old socks. There is no other way to describe it. Fortunately, the doors actually opened, so it could be flushed with fresh air during the day. I had the opportunity to see a couple of rooms and all bore the same shortcomings -- the air system appears to be central, so the room was never the right temperature. Given the relatively high rates, this is a major shortcoming. If you're going to charge higher rates, at least let me determine the room temperature. There are no closet--just tiny armoires, so don't plan to stay longer than a couple of days. The televisions are inconsistent. Mine did not get local channels, and a colleague's did. Unless you get a suite-like room (I apologize, but I don't know the classifications), the bathrooms are very small. Again, ok if you're there for 1-2 days, but if it was longer (or if it's more than 1 person) it would grow negatively on you very fast). Many things just didn't work--the towel warmer, the tv (properly) some lights, etc.

Room Tip: Get something larger, because the small rooms are too small except for short stays. Also, stay away...

This is my 3rd year bringing a group to Keswick for a Fall retreat, and we are already planning next year. From Lisa up front---who I am pretty sure does not have the word "no" in her vocabulary to Debbie who cooly and calmly accommodated every nuance of our group--including last minute venue changes and additions for dinner to Gergana who masterfully helps with special room requests to Marguerite in the spa who gave me a fabulous massage after I was done with my work duties. As an event planner I have worked with many resorts, but they all pale in comparison to the fine team at Keswick. Other resorts should send their staff to Keswick to learn something about service. Thanks! See ya next year!

We absolutely had a perfect birthday vacation at the Keswick. From the moment we arrived till we left the service was some of the best we have ever had. Our room was wonderful and we had a wonderful balcony overlooking the pool. We did a B&B package and our breakfast was fantastic every morning. Great steak at Fosset's and great service. The property was gorgeous too. We will definitely be back. Thank you, Keswick for making wonderful birthday memories.
