“Great B&B experience!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 14, 2012 via mobile

This was a fist stay at a B&B so we didn't know exactly what to expect. We stayed in the Ruby Hummer room and it was wonderful. Everyone was great & friendly. We enjoyed walking the property and sitting on our little patio being in our own world even though other people were there. Breakfast was great as well. Would highly reccomend and hope to go back again soon!

We recently stayed at Old Massanutten Lodge. It is in a nice rural location convenient to Harrisonburg and some wineries. A nice stop off of Skyline Drive so you can go into Harrisonburg for some good eats and drinks.

We stayed in the Cherub Room which we thought meant the property was well appointed for children. It's not. There is a steep staircase to a very narrow hallway and no gate, which made me very nervous. Thank goodness we brought plenty of books and toys. There was only one children's book in the room (old, old, old) and were provided with toys only when my child was exploring the "great room". We were invited to take them up to our room....We didn't exactly feel that our child was "welcome" and stayed in our room the entire time. In the room was a book that basically said that children were welcome but that other guests wanted to relax. (So, bring your kid and a muzzle?)

Food was fine but it was my first B&B stay ever that I was asked to provide an exact time for breakfast the night before and I wasn't provided with a few choices in the morning. Breakfast was just served to us.

The exterior was OK. We were told we could explore an outbuilding with our child "at our own risk". We declined.

Pluses - property was VERY clean. Much more clean and well kept than the average B&B! Mattresses were very nice and seemed to have been recently updated. Linens and blankets were clean and smelled fresh. Nightlights were in all the hallways and the child's room.

A charming B&B tucked back away from main roads but still only 10 minutes away from Harrisonburg. The lodge has been wonderfully restored. We stayed in the Hummer room (which surprisingly is not red) it has Jacuzzi tub, separate entrance and a balcony where you can see deer romp in the early morning hours. Breakfast was wonderful and unlike a lot of B&Bs Margie took time to find out what we liked to eat. (nothing worse than being a non meat eater staring at a ham and bacon omelet). Margie was super friendly and welcoming and even gave us the recipe for this apple dish she made for breakfast, but she wasn't overbearing are constantly hovering. It was a very relaxed atmosphere.

Room Tip: Choose Red Hummer room (which surprisingly is not red) it has Jacuzzi tub, separate entrance and a b...

This property is at the end of a rural road, so it is remarkably quiet and surrounded by green fields and forested hills. Each of our two rooms was unique in floor-plan and decor, the history of which the hostess explained. Both were comfortable and secure. There is a great-room reminiscent of the facility's beginnings as a vacation destination in the Roaring 20s. There no longer is a golf course or a dance band, but the building and grounds are still used for weddings. Coffee was available early in the morning, and breakfast was excellent. We spent our days elsewhere so we cannot comment on refreshments other than breakfast. A member of the proprietor's family is a potter whose lovely work is available for sale. All of us enjoyed our stay at the Old Massanutten Lodge.

The Old Massanutten Lodge is just outside Keezletown about five or six miles south of Harrisonburg in Virginia. It is at the end of a lane and is the ultimate getaway for some quiet time. The place has loads of character as it was an old hunting lodge and the welcome you get from the owners, Margie and Guy, is second to none. We had the Cherub Suite and found it to be very comfortable and spotlessly clean and downstairs there was plenty of tea or coffee and a snack or two at all times of the day. The other bonus is that there are no inflated prices for weekends or graduation.
Keezletown is a very small hamlet, for want of a better word, so a peaceful stay is guaranteed. If you want a good place to eat, go back to the main road and head off in the opposite direction from Harrisonburg to Hank's Smoke House for some of the best smoked food you could wish for. Have the sample platter and get an extra plate as it is far too much for one person. You won't be diasappointed. Make sure you visit the caves at Luray as they are absolutely spectacular. All in all, you would be hard pushed to find a better place to stay in the Harrisonburg area and my wife and I wouldn't go anywhere else. The Old Massanutten Lodge certainly has our vote.
