“Great 3 Day Visit to the Tides Inn”
Reviewed July 11, 2013

My wife and I just returned from a great 3 day stay at the Tides Inn. Very bueatiful resort with a relaxing atmosphere. Restaurant food was excellent as was the service. Enjoyed golf at the Golden Eagle ($88 green fee) and King Carter ($36 Green fee) courses. Both are outstanding courses. Had dinner one night at the Trick Dog Cafe in Irvington just a couple minutes from the resort. This is an excellent restaurant that should not be missed. All in all it was a great 3 days at thr Tides!

Room Tip: Vista Suites offer great views and plenty of room for relaxing.

The Tides Inn double charged me for my room. When brought to the attention of the General Manager Gordon Slatford, he was rude, condescending, very aggressive and attacked. He immediately went on the defense and denied any wrong doing before he even knew the details of the issue at hand. I wouldn't wish this service on my worst enemy. This man talked so much and denied this even after having seen my online statement showing BOTH charges. I advised I would handle it through my bank since he wasn't able to help, and he then got very defensive and angry and stated he would no longer help if I did so. The workers on the property are nice, but god forbid something like this happen and you seek help.

This is the kind of place that you hold in your mind, to picture once again, on those really busy days at work or during a February sleet storm. Just perfect. The view, the beautifully appointed room, the balcony--and oh, that view! We loved the Chesapeake club's food and especially the host, Philip, and our server who'd worked there 29 years! The farmer's market and surrounding area is just beautiful and the Tides is truly a treasure we'll remember for a long while.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a balcony and water view!

Thank you for your comment on Philip, he is a real southern gentleman. Indeed so many of our staff have worked at the Tides for 20 or 30 years that their role is entrenched in the service and character of the property. our presence here is not coincidence, we love what we do.

We spent 4 days at the Tides Inn in June - 2 adults and 3 older teens. It was a lovely family vacation. Easy to get to and once there, just enough to do without kids getting bored or parents feeling like they were opening their wallets at every turn.

We had connecting rooms on the first floor - the view wasn't as good as it would have been on the upper floors but we didn't spend much time in the room. Thermostats in the rooms work well and we were able to cool our rooms satisfactorily. Bathrooms were great - large with deep tubs.

Kids loved that they could just check out kayaks and paddleboards any time they wanted them. We spent all our afternoons on the water. Also, biked into town for lunch at the Local (great paninis and ice cream) and whiled away the time playing croquet, scrabble and outdoor chess.

Food was good but rather too refined for our kids. After one dinner at the hotel, we biked into town to eat. Had massages at the spa - therapists were good but facilities were so basic I wouldn't really call it a spa. No pool, sauna or steam room. Just a sitting area, changing rooms and the massage rooms.

We were quite pleased with our stay and would return again.

Room Tip: If you want a good view, choose a room on the second or third floor.

"The Northern Neck? It's so boring". Not true! The Northern Neck of Virginia is a magical place, isolated (for now) from strip malls and concrete. Driving down Rt. 3 toward Irvington reminds me of Ireland - green, lush, with low gentle hills. And there is plenty to do. The Tides Inn provides the backdrop to exploration. It is a charming hotel with a perfect location. There are incredible views, good food and nice rooms.

I recommend a morning bike ride to coffee and a muffin at The Local. Bikes are provided free. We loved wandering the streets and lanes and often being rewarded with a view of the river. We stayed two nights and the second morning we enjoyed breakfast and the view on the patio.

The Tides has kayaks, canoes and paddle boats, too. The nine-hole golf course was great fun. Clubs and carts are provided free, too. It only takes an hour or so to putter around the course. It would be nice course for beginners.

There are several state parks close to Irvington - we especially enjoyed Belle Island for great birding and hiking. And the drive to Reedville was gorgeous. Stop for a crabcake at Cockrell's Creek.

I recommend reading (google it) a NY Times article "Virginia's Lost History" by Guy Trebay before you go. He loves the Northern Neck as much as I do and has some good tips and a bit of history.

Active is good but I must add, is not mandatory. Young and older are often found reading under our family tree overlooking Carter Creek or just chilling beside the pool.
I am glad you had a good time, we look forward to seeing you back at the Tides.

Excellent Inn to relax and enjoy the view. Croquet, crabbing, bikes, lawn chess, pedalos, kayaks - all add to the laid back feel. Our daughter got married there..and overall the planning went very smoothly. The reception rooms do need a little updating to feel brighter less "brown and beige." All rooms are well located so it's not worth paying the extra for high end rooms as we did. Dog friendly and kid friendly but not over-run with either - so a really nice atmosphere.

Room Tip: all rooms are pretty equal ...some have better views but that comes with an outdoor patio that you h...

Thank you for your review we look forward to welcoming you back. Every year a different part of the resort recieves a facelift, this year it was our outdoor terraceand nearly half of our rooms next year will be equally substantial. The task is never finished, by the time we have finished one end we go back to the beginning!

My wife and I stayed at the Tides Inn for two nights last week for some rest & relaxation and it definitely matched and exceeded our needs. Check-in was easy and you are greeted as you drive up with a glass of ice cold lemonade by the doorman. Our room was just as we expected - very nice; nothing spectacular, but very nice, with a good view of the creek and the river leading out to the Chesapeake Bay. Almost all resort activities are included in your room rate and nominal resort fee; my wife and I are not golfers, so we instead did some kayaking each morning and some bicycling in the afternoon. No extra charge. The package deal we got included a $125 resort fee credit so we used that up between breakfasts and one dinner. Service was quite good, not exceptional and our meals were excellent. We felt very comfortable at all times with a generally casual and very friendly environment. Although this was a short escape for just the two of us, there were quite a few guests there with their children, which was nice to see as there are many healthy activities to keep the kids occupied. Great location, great service, great food, very relaxing. Would definitely return!

Room Tip: There are two primary buildings. The "main" building has no balconies, but the one with th...
