“The perfect resort - A true treasure”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 5, 2011

I have stayed at the Tides many times and find myself returning from this recent stay thinking I cannot letmuch time pass without another visit. The Tides is timeless and yet completely current; the hospitality, amenities and natural beauty make any visit a luxury and at the same time a necessity. Where else can you experience the ever changing landscape of the water, wildlife and peace while feeling pampered and deliciously spoiled? Try one of their beautiful Vista suites, have their special "Lemonade: and dine on the freshest seafood imaginable. Sleep under a fresh white lofty comforter and enjoy hot coffee as the sun rises and the watermen awaken. It is bliss, the on site spa, golf course and many activities that occur daily.....it would be easy to spend several days relaxing and seeing this beautiful Chesapeake Treasure..

Room Tip: Vista suites are prime for space and luxury. Very nice views and beautiful baths.

I've visited the Tides' Inn several years as part of an annual 'girls' reunion, and it has aged gracefully - no signs of wear. The rooms are lovely and spacious, the beds are comfortable The Garden House rooms give you a great view of the water and marina. The staff is always pleasant. Every year it's also enjoyable to sit in the living room with a glass of wine and watch the sun set, or a wedding reception on the patio.
Irvington is an extremely small, sleepy town. Lunch at "The Local" was excellent; shopping is always fun at "The Dandelion'. In previous years, we've visited other nearby small towns.
This is a great place to visit if your focus is to slow down, or to spend time with friends or family. There aren't a lot of outside distractions.
One downside - the rates are rather expensive, especially when you add in the resort fee.

Room Tip: The second floor of the Garden House is excellent.

I am glad you enjoyed your stay and utilised the shops and retsaurants that Irvington offers
I note your comment on price and will offer the following advice. Try to book midweek when demand is slightly lower you will probably experience lower rates for the same great product.
Mind you a lot of what we offer is actually priceless, the beautiful waters, the vast array of outdoor activities, the security and serenity, but most of all the friendly sothern hospitality we are renowned for.

My husband and I recently stayed at this property and it exceeded our expectations. We got a discounted rate and it was well worth the two days we spent there. It's a older very well maintained property offering southern charm. We loved the quiet and serene, not too many activities, so if you're looking for nightlife this is not your cup of tea :) We went mid week and most of the guests were of "mature" age. Our well appointed room overlooked the bay. The amenities are plentiful and complimentary: Golfing, kayaking, canoeing. If you get there before 2:00 p.m. you can join the cove cruise for a nominal fee, or you can call ahead and reserve a space. Lovely well maintained grounds. Staff is very couteous and friendly. The nearby towns are very quiet, do not have many restaurants or things to do, dining in the resort's restaurant is your best bet. Will love to go back just to unwind.

This is the second time we've been to The Tides Inn on our coastal cruises and each time has been great. And this time even better than the last. The food in the restaurant was fabulous! The crispy Calamari crispy, tender and succulent all at the same time served with an amazing Pineapple Curry dipping sauce. The calamari is large..so be aware that they are not the usual small rings that you find anywhere. Which makes the chef that much more brilliant in my books for being able to produce such a tender outcome. Other treats were the crab cakes with sweet potato hash, local flounder tempura, and a simply amazing and surprising veggie dish...Fall Harvest Vegetable Curry. We ordered an extra one of those to take back to the boat for the next day's lunch. Dennis Miller is a wonderful and attentive bartender who has been there forever, and the charm, friendliness and intelligence of James Garner the restaurant manager made us question leaving after just 2 evenings.
For the boater, there is a shuttle service that will take you to provision and they have put in beautiful new floating docks since our last visit. Great electric. A spa, fitness room, bikes, tennis, pool, business office and being a hotel, they'll even do laundry. For the golfer there is a 9 hole golf course on the premises that looks to be beautifully maintained. The Dockmaster ever present to help with anything. A not to miss stop for the cruiser.

Thank you for stopping by. I have been delighted by the quality and stability of our new floating dock system and it presents so well.
I appreciate you mentioning some of our staff by name, they work hard for your praise and it is gratefully recieved.
Come back again in the spring when boating weather returns.
Best regards.

Recently we had two nights at this property and were sorely disappointed, beginning with the check in process. Pulling up to the the hotel, there was no one there to help with the baggage, so as a well mannered guest, we maneuvered the car out of the portico, only to be chastised by an employee for not parking properly. We promptly complied , and moved the car back to the portico for help.

The room temperature was 83 degrees. The door slide did not work, so this required a trip to the front desk to get someone to repair it until the temperature could be normalized.

Dinner in their fine restaurant was good but it took two full hours to be served after we put our order in.

As frequent travelers, we have stayed at both the other two landmark in and near Virginia, i.e. The Homestead and the Greenbrier. We realize that the Tides Inn believes to be in the same "club." It is not.

Overpriced, under-serviced, and underwhelming. Very sorry to have to report this way.

I take pride in reviewing all our guests comments and I note a similiar level of dissatisfaction in reviews of other fine properties by this writer. Thank you for your feedback we can learn from all experiences.

Immaculate rooms, beautiful grounds, surrounded by water, antebellum architecture. I visited at the start of the summer and it was a magical step back in time. It had all the quirks of an old bed and breakfast with all the perks of 21st century amenities.

Room Tip: Rooms not in the main hotel, but in the side houses are much bigger and in my opinion a better bang...

Thank you for your review. The Tides is a very eclectic and traditional property with a few quirks. It is true that we have a variety of rooms with varying sizes, views and amenities. We try to select an appropriate room for each guest but if one does not suit for any reason we will be happy to show others and find the perfect fit. Availability permitting of course.
In winter the main building is kind of nice and coffee is served in the morning by the log fire in the View room lounge and what a great view it is of Carter Creek.

Had a business dinner at their "casual" restaurant. Service was excellent. Food great. Location and decor perfect. Considering the location the meeal was reasonably priced too..

Wonderful to see a review from a guest who is not actually staying at the Inn.
We still battle the old notion that a resort restaurant is only for residents of the resort. Not so my friends, we welcome everyone and parking is easy or valet if you like.
Thank you for reminding us that The Tides Inn is also a very fine restaurant.
