“A Grand Hotel, but a Golf Resort?”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 6, 2012

Golf Digest lists The Homestead Lower Cascades course a four star out of five. This course is not worth the time, and certainly not worth the lofty rating. And Golf Digest ranks The Homestead as a Top 40 Golf Resort? I think not. When first arriving at The Homestead and paying the upcharge for three days of golf, I arrived at the pro shop just after six to hit a bucket of balls and walk nine holes. I was turned away for both as the range and pro shop were closed. Sort of a "tough luck" attitude even though I had three hours until dark. For a golf resort, I found The Homestead very short of my expectations.

Thank you for the feedback regarding your recent stay at The Homestead. We were disappointed to hear that your recent stay wasn’t the experience you expected. We take great pride in our golf courses and hope that you will return to give our award winning golf courses another chance.

We spent 2 days at the resort that included 24 hours without power! A severe storm left us without power - including air conditioning - on a June/July weekend with temperatures 90+
The staff worked tirelessly to accommodate everyone to the best of their ability. We had a great time despite the heat and using the bathroom in the dark! The renovated pool area is already very nice, and it is easy to see it will be amazing when the lazy-river and slides are complete. It will entertain kids and fit in with the hotel and its surroundings as well.

I did not give the hotel an excellent rating because there were a few details with the dining room that can be improved for a hotel of this quality and cost.

Room Tip: Rooms in the tower or wings are best. Pay a little more and its worth it!

I stayed 2 nights for a business retreat and here are a few pros and cons:

Pros:
BEAUTIFUL drive to get there and breath-taking property.
Great place for history geeks.

Cons:
Very limited self parking spaces
There is a reason why they called it the "old wing" because the wallpaper in our room was peeling off.

The price/value of this place DOES NOT amount to the poor service we had received. I would not recommend this to my friends and family unless I want to put them into an UNCOMFORTABLE situation where the moment you stepped in you feel an 'unwelcome' vibe from all the staff.

When my husband and I checked in, the valet/attendant NEVER greeted us, asked if they could help us with our luggage OR even made eye contact.

When I booked our room we specifically requested for a fridge and a microwave. There was no microwave and the fridge did not even turned on. The AC unit was not turned on - need I remind you, it is about 100 degrees outside so imagine the temperature inside our room.

A group of 7 people were waiting for a shuttle pick up at the town center. About 4-5 shuttle drivers saw us (waiting in the blistering heat!) and drove away! Maybe the story would've been different if we were not a group of minorities...who knows!

Overall, I would not return to this resort.

Room Tip: Request to be in the 'new wing'!

We regret to hear that The Homestead didn’t meet your expectations during your recent stay. Our guests are our number one priority and we’re sorry you felt otherwise. Your experience certainly wasn’t a representation of how our resort operates. We would very much appreciate another chance to show you how important our guests are to us.

I stayed three nights for a business retreat in this legendary property. It's an industry unto itself in this remote but beautiful area.
From check-in through meals I encountered good to great staff people, delicious meals, and gracious service. I saw the property both in a mid-week downtime and a wedding-induced frenzy. It did well in all ranges.
Highlights: the breakfast buffet, dinner (except for some uneven Jamaican servers who tended toward the dictatorial), and the bartender at a private client event who mixed the best classic Manhattan I've had in years.
This is a hike from almost any airport. I did it from Dulles. But the drive is wonderful. Brought me back to my teens living in this part of the world.
Much construction and expansion going on here. The property has been lovingly preserved. My room had racked walls and obvious age but all was expertly carpentered and concealed. I found it charming and comfortable.
Top marks. You should stay here at least once.

Room Tip: Several generations of construction. I stayed in the oldest section of the hotel and found it comfor...

We stayed in a 3 bedroom home at the Homestead... It was amazing! Huge screened in back porch with large hot tub. So quite and relaxing at night. Golf is first class! Views are breath-taking! Pool is fed by underground hot spring and is warm and delightful. The spa is wonderful. Dinner at Sam Snead's was delicious. Can't wait to go back!

Room Tip: Three bedroom houses are awesome for family vacation!

My fiance found a "deal" on Travelzoo for The Homestead, so we decided to check it out for the 4th of July weekend (June 29-July 2, 2012). The deal included a free activity voucher, discounts on other activities like the spa and outdoor adventures... the deal was approximately 500.00 total for JUST the room, no taxes, gratuities or the stupid resort fee.

We arrived on Friday, the place is STUNNING to look at and we were VERY excited to get our weekend going... First, we checked in just fine, our itinerary was given to us, and we thought we were all set... we were on the 15th floor of the main room...

We get to our room and its HOT, now the weekend was slated to be in the mid-90s to 100s, and our room read about 90... the AC was frozen over and we called to get someone to check it out... we waited over 1.5hrs to get someone to check it out and his solution was to turn it off for a while and let it dethaw... we had dinner plans so that wasn't a big deal.

Sam Sneads for dinner... TERRIBLE food! We got the special (Fish & Chips) and I've had better food at Ruby Tuesdays! Drinks and Service was good, but not worth the money for food!

Came back to the room and turned the AC on and it BARELY worked! Mother nature had other plans as we watched a TERRIBLE storm come through and knock the power out to the resort... not much emergency lighting (none in the rooms, no flashlights or anything), much of the halls were dark, and you could at least get drinks and food...

Saturday (June 30), we had a falconry and horseback riding activity... because of the storm horseback riding was cancelled (it was a trail ride) because of the many trees down (no fault of theirs). We tried to schedule others and the ONLY activity our voucher was good for was archery, and that was the ONLY activity the resort had that day... so needless to say it was PACKED and there were so many additional fees if you weren't an "experienced" archer.

We tried negotiating a discount on another service (dinner, spa, etc), we asked for 5-10% off of something, and they said no... spa ended up closing because of the no power... we decided to try the breakfast buffet, NOT worth the money... its basically a continental breakfast with a few meats and an omelet station... BE MINDFUL OF YOUR CHECK AMOUNT!!!! Our server ended up changing a 4.00 tip to a 9.00 tip. Now, I'll be honest, we left 4.00 on a 58.00 bill, and did this because its a buffet and the servers don't do more than clear the table and fill the drink. We are normally 20%+ tippers at regular restaurants.

We were debating on staying, but found out 1/2 of the "dinner" we were paying 60.00/person for, was cancelled, and because of that was now inside, no fireworks, no wine tasting, and just a regular buffet (was reduced to 40.00/person)... so with the reputation of the food so far, we decided to leave. Luckily the resort was nice and letting everyone who wanted to check out w/o any "cancellation" penalties, but they weren't compensating anyone for anything else...

The falconry lesson in the morning was FANTASTIC! I would come for 1 night JUST to experience this... you are able to hold the bird (well feed it) and watch it fly around... it is AMAZING!!!!!

Overall, if you are someone who likes to be around a "country club" setting, risk the chance of being nickel-dimed for EVERYTHING you do, having a 15% resort fee on almost everything you do, shady staff, and just mediocre food, this is the place for you!
