“Another Wonderful Stay”
Reviewed December 30, 2008

Over the past dozen years or so, we have stayed at the Village Inn at least 6 times. Our experiences have always been extremely favorable. The rooms are very tastefully decorated; the housekeeping staff is to be commended as the rooms are immaculate. The pool area and grounds are well-kept. Additionally, we have eaten in the restaurant for both breakfast and dinner and have always thoroughly enjoyed our meals. Specifically, the dinner buffet has a generous assortment of dishes and is reasonably priced. The personnel are extremely helpful and courteous. It is obvious that the owners take great pride in their business. We certainly appreciate their efforts and hope to return again soon.

We stayed at The Village Inn, located just south of Harrisonburg, Virginia. We like this motel, and this is actually our 2nd stay. Our first stay was 10 years ago. We enjoyed it then as well. But both times, we arrived late, after a 7 hour drive and a side trip to Luray Caverns, and did not get to use the swimming pool, or playground for our kids.

Here are our positives and negatives of our most recent stay in the summer of 2008...

POSITIVE
- Very spacious and clean rooms, with sofa, refrigerator, microwave, and double sinks in bathroom.
- Price is under $100 per night
- Location is just outside of town, so almost in the country
- Outdoor deck in rear of room has view of mountains
- Complimentary continental (small) breakfast on Sundays
- On-site restaurant

NEGATIVE
- Double beds instead of queen size beds. Queen is more comfortable with 2 people, and these rooms definitely have the space for queen size beds. Their rooms with 1 bed do have a queen size bed though.
- Construction in parking lot during our stay

Overall, this motel is above average, especially for a small family owned operation. Although I prefer queen size beds for my family, I would stay here again, if in the area.

We stayed here on trip from NY to NC. Was a little worried when we decided to eat there because we were too tired to go elsewhere to eat and when they said buffet...but how wrong I was. A real home cooked meal including a great dessert for $9.95! Great salad bar with yellow cherry tomatoes, many homemade dressings to choose from, incredible tomato basil soup, very good salisbury steak, mushroom chicken and herbed new potatoes. And the people are great. Linda our server was quirky, funny and incredibly attentive

The room was huge, clean with a deck with chairs off the bathroom. Mircowave, refrig, the beds were a little hard but we loved this place. The outdoor pool was large with a hot tub in a gazebo at one end. the same family has owned it for years, the employees have worked there for years and it really shows in the pride and homely feel of this great place!

My family and I have stayed at a number of hotels in Harrisonburg because my son goes to a university in the area. We decided to give The Village Inn a try, based on the reviews on Trip Advisor. While we found the hotel staff extremely helpful and polite, the room very clean, and the grounds well-kept, there are some simple improvements that we feel need to be made.

Pros:
Hotel has an interesting history. The owners and many of the employees are related. The staff is extremely friendly and helpful. Check-in and check-out was fast and easy.

The Village Inn Restaurant was a down-home place with tasty homemade dinner and breakfast buffets ($9.95 and $7.25, respectively).

We liked the outdoor pool and playground area for children.

Some rooms are suites, some have small balconies and some have kitchens.

This hotel is outside of the busier part of the city and has more quaint charm, but it is only 10min away from downtown H’burg.

Cons:
Our room had a decent, but obstructed view, of a mountain and I-81.

We smelled a septic tank smell when we were sitting on our balcony.

The hotel is situated on US-11, which is a noisy road. Throughout the night we heard trucks rumbling through. It was difficult to get a good night’s sleep.

The room was very large (bigger than most) and very clean however it smelled as though too many cleaning products were used and it smelled a bit musty. We were lucky to have windows that opened but one of our windows didn't have a working lock and the screen on the porch was tearing away at the bottom.

While the AC was easy to operate, it was extremely noisy to the point were we couldn’t hear the television.

The bathroom was very clean, had two sinks, a shower/whirlpool tub, and even had a window. However the complimentary soap is liquid soap in a dispenser.

While the mentioned inconveniences didn’t bother us too much, the one thing that turned us completely off was how uncomfortable beds were. The beds sagged in the middle and off to the side. To make matters worse, the mattresses were very thin and had little padding. We woke up with sore/stiff backs, shoulders, and bodies.

The other area which caused us concern was the state of the chairs in the room. They were worn out, old, and wobbly. Not comfortable at all.

Summary:
In order for us to stay here again, The Village Inn needs to update the beds and chairs. This area is what caused our review to go from a solid 3 rating to an okay 2 rating. There are some things that need to be fixed. It is an OK hotel at a reasonable price. We normally stay at Hampton Inn, Springhill Suites, Marriott Courtyard hotels (in general – not necessarily in H’burg) – we would go to one of these places before going to Village Inn in Harrisonburg.

  • Liked — Friendly staff, large room, deep outdoor pool.
  • Disliked — Highway noise, air quality in rooms, and the beds.

I gave this little motel a 5 star because it is so rare to find a small family owned (for 73 years!) motel that is just what you need after a long drive. The room we had was very clean, smelled good and had everything we needed.

Beds were comfortable, had a DVD player, good wireless Internet, whirlpool tub, microwave, etc.

We had our kids with us, and the outdoor pool was great.

The Village Inn runs their own restaurant on site - it was great. We didn't try the dinner, as the restaurant is closed on Sunday, but we had their buffet breakfast there on Monday morning. The food is fresh, imaginative and about $7 for all you can eat. Awesome! Our room was only $79.

The main thing is that the motel is small, rooms clean, really nice people that work there, in a beautiful valley for about $80.

I would stay here over a $150 Hampton or H.I or H.I.X anytime.

We had the opportunity to stay at The Village Inn on our way back home from up north and made a last minute call to the hotel and they had a nice room waiting for us when we arrived. We have stayed here before and enjoy the old fashioned mom & pop feel of the place. Not many of these simple, clean motels left around so it is a pleasant change from the chains. Hotel is right off of I-81 but sits in the middle of farmland and so it is peaceful and the little decks off many rooms have nice quiet views. Our room was very large with 2 queen beds and a sofa and a large bathroom. Very clean...very simple. Our room was on the front of the hotel facing the road and next time we would ask not to be on the road side since cars did zoom by all night. The restaurant was closed, so our only choice for food was a fast food place up the road.
We stay at hotels approx. 7-10 nights a month and usually stay at Hamptons, & Courtyards and we are VERY picky about cleanliness, decor and feel of a place. The Village Inn does a good job with all of this. We love the change of pace that The Village Inn offers and at about $70. for 2 Queens, the price can't be beat. In the summer the pool and shuffleboard and other games make it a great experience for kids. Will certainly stay here again when in the neighborhhod.

This place was perfect for a one night stay right off of the Interstate 81 on our way to Millboro, VA. It is at exit 240 in Harrisonburg VA. The place is described as one of the first Motor Courts in the East but has been updated and modernized w/o losing its charm! The room was extremely clean and comfortable. However, the bed was a bit lumpy and hard! There is a comfy loveseat and TV. The bathroom had a whirlpool tub with a heating lamp overhead. Very very clean! The view was not as described in the brochure but that was ok since we were only there to sleep. There is a restaurant attached which serves a limited menu for dinner. However, their breakfast buffet was the freshest and most delicious I have tasted in a long time! The hospitality was great too! The pool was not really ready since it was only early May but it looked like it would be great in the summer. All in all, the room was reasonably priced, comfortable and clean! We were hesitant because they are listed as "pet friendly" and our last experience with a pet friendly lodging was intolerable!!! But not here!
