“The name says it all”
Reviewed October 4, 2011

I heard about this place from my husband who had gone there with friends. Finally went and had to rush to get a table outside because there was none inside, it was that busy on a Wednesday afternoon. The wait staff are pleasant and the atmosphere is comfortable, if a bit noisy as it faces Main Street and a open parking lot.

The beer list is amazing, choices from all over the world, sorted by types (pilsner, lager, etc), and including near beer (non-alcoholic) and hard ciders. The prices for the beers are average for the area.

The food is basic: burgers, fries (regular & sweet potato), grilled cheese, pickles, and fried Oreos. The burgers can be ordered as basic, or there are specials of the day. I wasn't brave enough to try the Elvis (peanut butter?) but others around us demanded it as their favorite. The beef is Wagyu (American Kobe) and very delicious, but the burger price is a bit higher than a Five Guys. The sides are reasonable, and the fried Oreos are wonderful!

No franchise can match the atmosphere this joint exudes! If you're in town or nearby at Massanutten, give it a try!

“Average Food, Average Prices”
Reviewed August 22, 2011

Jack Brown's Beer & Burger Joint on Main Street in Harrisonburg, VA has a short menu for food and a long one for beer. They boast that they have over 100 beers on their menu. We were impressed by the numbers, but not necessarily by the varieties. I chose a Stella, safe and middle of the road. My husband chose a Kolch. Of the two, I preferred the Stella. The restaurant offers 2 burgers each day, a grilled cheese sandwich, fries, sweet potato fries, and may be one or two more items. Every thing is extra. And that is all. The burger is supposedly American Kobe beef. Tomato and lettuce are not available since they might interfere with the flavor of the beef. One of the burgers offered today came with cream cheese and hot pepper jelly. Really? Another burger offered later in the week comes with peanut butter and hot peppers. Again, really? These flavors don't interfere with the flavor of the beef? I ordered a hamburger cooked medium rare with grilled onion. It wasn't on the menu, but I asked. The burger arrived cooked medium to medium well. When I pointed this out to the server she just smiled and walked away. No offer to cook a new burger, and no offer to adjust the bill. The beef was average. 80% hamburger from my local grocery store would have tasted just the same. The bun was an ordinary bun from the grocery store. Cooked, the burger might have been a quarter of a pound. My sweet potato fries were not hot when they arrived at the table, and were nothing special. My husband's cheese burger was also over cooked, and just as underwhelming. It wasn't a bad dining experience, but it was also not something to be repeated. Two bottles of beer, one burger, one cheese burger and one order of sweet potato fries with tip - $22.72.

“Try this place !”
Reviewed July 11, 2011

Went to Jack Brown's on a Sunday afternoon. Had to wait a long time for a table outside although there were 2 empty ones. Our waitress was attentive. Ordered 3 specialty burgers with egg, cheese and bacon on top. Delicious, just the right serving size. Fries were fresh and salty. One burger was ordered on a glazed donut - a bit over the top for my taste, but I wanted to say I tried it. I would definitely recommend this restaurant. The owners are opening a chicken restaurant 2 doors down in October 2011. There is a specialty burger every day and you can order a plain burger anytime. Also, for kids - grilled cheese sandwiches.
