We tried this out after reading the great reviews here, and were MORE than pleasantly surprised with our meal. Taking advantage of 1/2 price tap beer and appetizers, olur family of 5 enjoyed a FABULOUS meal, including appetizers and beers for $50. Great variety and a kids menu too!!

“Terrific Experience. Worth the effort to find”
Reviewed July 16, 2010

We were looking for an alternative to highway food while driving south on I-81 through western Virginia. We found Clementine and had a terrific dinner. There's something about good restaurants in college towns and Clementine fits the bill. Here are the highlights:

- The menu is reasonably priced. Options ranges from just a few dollars to more expensive choices. One of the least expensive options are the hamburgers. A member of our party ordered one and it was generously proportioned and well-prepared.

- The food is great. I like to think that I can appreciate good cooking. All three dishes we ordered were skillfully done and used high-quality ingredients. There was no evidence of anything being microwaved.

- The service is attentive. Our waitress was enthusiastic, attentive and knew the menu.

- The interior space is cool. The restaurant's interior design is appealing, funky and frankly, interesting. The owners did a great job creating an attractive place to house their business.

The restaurant is located down-town and is approx 10-15 minutes from the highway. It's well worth the effort to get off the highway and find it. We'll make it a point to stop again on our next trip through Harrisonburg.

“Good find”
Reviewed July 1, 2010

The tourist office recommended several restaurants, including Clementine's. It was late for lunch, but we were hungry, so we walked into Clementine's. A pile of newspapers by the front door let us know this was a "do what you want" kind of place. My barbecue sandwich had great smokiness and a tart taste; cole slaw and friend onion rings on top were a true bonus. And don't be tempted to substitute for the house-made chips: slices of beet, potato and sweet potato fried until crisp but not greasy. Altogether a good combination. Several good and unusual beers on draft round out the picture. My companion had a fried trout poor boy, and went with the server's suggestion of a vegetable soup. Both choices were, she said, very good. The menu had several interesting vegetarian choices. From our sample, the food is good, fresh, prepared mostly on site, and fairly priced.

The restaurant seems low key. (Several people at the bar were watching world cup soccer; they have night time events, including a team trivia night.) The servers were relaxed and seemed to work as a team, not as individuals. Some places are bars that happen to serve food; others are restaurants that happen to serve beer, and others still get the best of both; Clementine's is luckily in the last category.

Coincidentally, we stopped at the Thunderbird diner just outside Harrisonburg for breakfast, which we enjoyed, and found it is part of the Clementine's group.

“Great Atmosphere!”
Reviewed May 4, 2010

The restaurant has brick walls and artwork everywhere. We went on a Tuesday so we were seated right away. They have an interesting seating lay out that could make for cramped quarters but as it was quiet we were very comfortable. Great music playing in the background.

For dinner I had a B.L.A.T.(bacon, lettuce, avocado, tomato sandwich $6.95) and my husband had NY Strip (19.95 - their priciest entree on the menu). His steak was cooked perfectly and the bread definitely made the sandwich, as it appeared to be artisanal and hopefully local. I also tried a special martini made from muddled basil, white grapefruit, honey and vodka that was delicious and fresh. Our server didn't really check on us til we were almost done with our food but it didn't bother us since we were quite happy with our meals. Everything on the menu is very reasonably priced and they had some specials running that looked great.

Trivia happened to be cancelled that night but it seems like a great environment for after work dinner and drinks. Would love to go back next time I was in town.
