My husband, grandson and I walk Sandy Bottom, they for Pokemon collection and I get the exercise. :-) They have camp sites, pavilions for get togethers, and playground for kids. You can check out kayaks and paddle boats. Worth checking out!

This is a wonderful place with flat hiking/biking trails and a pier for fishing as well as campsites ( a little hike from the parking lot, so be prepared- but it's flat), and yurts. They will clearly explain that there is 1) NO ALCOHOL ALLOWED 2) YOU HAVE TO HAVE A PARKING PASS FOR EACH VEHICLE LEFT THERE OR VISITING AFTER HOURS- LIMITED TO 2/campsite to avoid large, raucous parties 3) NO FIRES/NOISE after 10pm...all this they make clear to you when you rent a campsite/yurt. So anyone posting they had a bad time because of all those things JUST DIDN'T READ THE RULES! No the camp's fault but theirs, If you want a nice, quiet, non-rowdy place to take your kids, this is the place! Friendly staff and a quaint park/hike with playground. Easy for those who can't do big hikes on hilly terrain. Also, there is a dog park (you have to be a member, but it's only $10/year, just bring your shot records in and they'll sign you up.)

Sandy Bottom is ready for visitors 365 days a year. Educational opportunities and camping experiences are scheduled through Hampton Parks & Rec, or directly on site.

The location for Sandy is off I64 around 1.5 miles. The park sits just 10-15 miles West of the HRBT. Signage help direct motorist to the entrance. Parking is designated in a few lots and has always been adequate on my visits. Some debris has been in th area although trash cans are present.

How Sandy Bottom come about may be a mystery to some. It is a man made lake and the name derives from the sand on its bottom. The water depth is not as deep as you may think. The beginnings of Sandy came about decades ago with the construction of nearby Interstate 64. Tons and tons of dirt was needed creating the large watering hole.

I keep returning because I love the water views. The wooded trail around the lake is around 2.5 miles. Its wide and flat which is perfect for a run, jog, or walk. I saw an abundant amount of jogger strollers and happy babies enjoying the ride.

Canoeing, kayaking and paddle boating is a common activity on the water. Rental boats are reasonable. Cabins are available for rent. Unfortunately debris has been see every where in the park. I urge visitors to help pick up trash when you see it.

Dog owners have their own fenced area and tags are checked each time by staff. Registration of your K9 is around $10. This is the only location your pet is permitted.

The Nature Center is an educational building that has displays and even live reptiles. The structure includes a meeting room and restrooms. This is the office for the park ranger staff. I'm not overly impressed by the physical displays. However I am impressed by the services offered by rangers and Hampton Parks.

This is a gem of a recreation space in the 757 that probably is not nearly as known to Southsiders, but should be. Put this fantastic park on your list to enjoy with the family this Fall.

We have been going to Sandy Bottom to walk for quite a few years. My wife has a back issue and on leg is longer than the other. She looks down the entire time we walk looking for roots that cross the trail. There are some paved or sandy paths but most of them go through the woods and have a LOT of roots, rocks and tripping hazards. She has trips many times. The last time we there was last spring when there was lots of leaves on the trails. She didn't see a branch that had stuck in the ground and broken off as it blended with the leave. She went flying and landed on a large root on her thigh. She didn't break it but she had a 10' by 10' hematoma. 6 months later it is still 3" by 3". So, it's great to walk there but do be careful...they need to take care of the paths and paint the roots so they are more visible. When we go again she'll be walking on the wide open path or road and I'll meet her after walking our dog through the woods. She says she'll never walk a path through the woods here again.
