“Surprising Smithsonian quality exhibits in downtown Hampton”

Hands-on, fun exhibits alongside vintage air and space craft. IMAX theater with current films. Ice skating rink in winter months. Don't miss the restored carousel in the adjacent plaza.

“A Modern Centerpiece for Downtown Hampton Partnered with NASA”
Reviewed January 29, 2012

Wonderful architecture on the water with tall ceilings and lots of glass. Many full-scale aircraft suspended from the ceilings and an iMax theatre. There is plenty to see and do for an hour or so if you can't quiet make it to the Smithsonian.

“Great museum, Exciting Exhibits”
Reviewed January 21, 2012

This is a great attraction. The entrance fee was 11.50 if you just wanted to visit the exhibits and there are extra costs and combo deals to include the IMAX. The parking garage is just past the museum on the right hand side and is free parking. We visited on a very quiet day and were lucky enough to meet a volunteer, Roy, just after we arrived. He spent a lot of time with us and pointed out many things we would not have noticed. He was incredibly knowledgeable on the Apollo 12 Lunar Module and explained the various marks on the shell. There is a display on the Wright Brothers as well as several aircraft hanging from the ceiling. He was able to point out many interesting facts about these planes and explain there markings to us. He was able to give us a bit more of the inside story and we appreciated his time. Upstairs is an Airtrans plane which when you look inside is an opportunity to try and land a plane yourself, very funny when you have a go. Also upstairs is a space exhibition where you can see the various rocket types that have been used, see a piece of moon rock and a piece of mars rock which we had never seen before. There are also lots of hands on things for children throughout the museum, including steering a rover on mars, making a paper plane that will actually fly into their tunnel and designing your own plane. The shop is also quite good with a variety of things for all pocket. Would definately recommend this for families or anyone with an interest in aviation. 3 Hours is enough time to see all the major exhibits but you could easily spend longer there, especially if you try all the hands on things.
