You will imagine you are not in Virginia, but in Alsace-Lorraine!! We arrived at this wonderful French restaurant ( 45 min from D.C.) and felt we were transported to the French countryside! The ambiance got us there, but the food, will keep us going back! We have a penchant for French food, and the Haeringer family-run restaurant did not disappoint. It is a prefix meal, with each course being a culinary delight. The service was as if you were dinner guests in their own home. In fact, it is my understanding that much of the furnishings are from their personal collection. Order the chocolate soufflé, even though there is an excess charge, as it is beyond delicious!!

This is a lovely place with great food and wines. It is very reliable and charming! Our last dining experience there was a special wine tasting meal, which was fun and delicious!

It is quite possible that our reaction to L'Auberge Chez Francois is colored by the fact that we dined there two nights after a gastronomic extravaganza at the Inn at Little Washington, and may be a little more negative than it might have been otherwise.
The restaurant is beautiful, a softly lit room that while large, seemed warm and cozy on a rainy night. The service was very attentive, and made helpful suggestions about beverage choices.
The food, for the most part, was very good, especially the veal, although my wife's duck breast was dry. My in-laws seemed to enjoy the meals as well.

It has been awhile since we have eaten at L'Auberge Chez Francois- and I guess it will be awhile before we return. While the ambiance was excellent and the service adequate (though a bit slow), the food was definitely a significantly cut below both our prior experience at this restaurant and our current exprience with fine dining in the Washington D.C. metro area. Our lobster bisque tasted as if it had made a beeline from the local Costco. The lobster was tough and tasteless and the veal scallopini had a tarragon sauce that absolutely overwhelmed the veal, the mushrooms and anything else that might have been there-no subtle fine French sauces here. The house salad suffered from the same tarragon issue, the entree vegetables were overcooked and the raspberry sauce accompanying the raspberry souffle dessert was overly sweet and tasted like it again was from the local discount food store. For the cost of the prix fixe meal (about $75-80 each excluding extra for the souffle and the cocktails/wine), one expects more- especially from this establishment that has a long history of having a fine reputation. Time for Chef Jacques to take a refresher course.

We've been to this lovely French restaurant twice, and we even went once to its predecessor, Chez Francois, when it was located in downtown Washington, D.C. Both our visits here have been for special anniversary dinners.

This time, we decided to try the Sunday Brunch, since it was the time of year when we knew the gardens here would be blooming. It was just a little too chilly to eat outside at noon, but we were given a great table by a window with a view of the garden. The meal was superb, as we knew it would be from our previous visit. The prix-fixe menu lets you select your entree and then you have a choice of appetizers and desserts. In addition, you are served a bread plate, a salad, and a sorbet to "cleanse your palate" before the main course. We don't drink alcohol, but those who do would have a fine choice of beverages. Our waiter, Brandon, was very thoughtful and attentive without interfering with our conversation, as some waiters tend to do. All the dishes we tried were wonderfully flavorful and very attractively arranged on the plates. You don't want to hurry over a meal here - instead you want to enjoy this lovely and relaxing experience in the dining rooms filled with antiques and Old World decor!
