This little restaurant is not so easy to find, so a GPS might be helpful. It's pretty unassuming outside (as well as inside), but a great find. We were in Richmond on business and were looking for a nice place for lunch. We were the first customers to enter the rather small dining room, and thought it was interesting that there were a dozen or so waitresses standing around. We soon found out why - within 20 minutes or so, the place was packed! I had a luncheon special, the, chicken molonaise, which included two large portions of chicken. Great meal! The wine list is printed on wine bottles placed on each table. Kind of noisy but inexpensive with very good service and excellent food. We will return.

“Real Italian!”
Reviewed April 11, 2012

This place is awesome. Small little restaurant, authentic Italian food that is great. Atmosphere isn't as quaint as other old Italian restaurants might be, but the food is great and the portions are huge.

“Delicious Italian food just like up north!”
Reviewed April 10, 2012

The food here is awesome! We've been a few times and each time we are just as happy about our choices as the last time. Being from up north we miss a lot of the great food that we had up there and Mama Cucina's is the closest we've found to the tasty Italian food like we used to get up in the northeast.

This is a family style restaurant meaning you get HUGE portions that are intended to be shared... or you can get your own plate and have enough left-overs to get 1-2 more meals out of it!

The prices range from about $15-$30 per plate but remember each plate is enough for 2-3 meals so these prices are very reasonable. You can get one plate to share between 2 people and still have left-overs!

My fave dish is the Chicken Carbonara. Bacon, chicken and pasta in a tasty cream sauce, how can you go wrong? We've also had a sausage and pasta dish (delicious!) and one time we got the nightly special which was a whole baked fish (head and all) which was also amazing.

The salad and bread appetizers come free with your entree's, and the dipping oil for the bread is sooooo good! You can purchase a few alcoholic beverages here (i think it might just be beer & wine) or BYO for a small fee of about $3 for corking so it's well worth bringing your own bottle of wine if there's something you love.

The desserts look great but we've never had room in our belly's to actually try one. Maybe we'll have to start with dessert as an appetizer one of these times :-)

Definitely check this place out. It's small so it gets pretty crowded so you might want to make a reservation to ensure you don't have to wait for a table. But it is well worth the wait so come with an empty stomach and prepare for a delicious food experience!

“If you love Italian, GO!”
Reviewed April 2, 2012

First, dear Trip Advisor, why doesn't this restaurant show up in the RICHMOND restaurant reviews? Most visitors to Richmond have never heard of "Glen Allen, VA".
Second, dear Trip Advisor, the name is "Mama CUCINA" (that's like ... Italian ... for "kitchen" ... y'know... ?)
Now, fellow Richmond travelers, Glen Allen is a suburb a short drive west, on the western outskirts of Richmond, maybe 6 miles west on IH 66, a relatively affluent suburb, by the looks of it ... higher end stores, a very nice mall nearby
You'll find Mama Cucina just off (normally named) West Broad Street, at Cox Road, clustered with several other restaurants and tucked into a clean and inconspicuous strip center amongst a cluster of suburban hotels ... you know em: HyattHouse,HamptonInn,HiltonGardenSuites, etc, etc. If you're staying in one of these for several days and have a fridge and a microwave, go to Mama Cucina early in your stay ... you'll need to take home leftovers, and you'll be happy too. Other reviewers' comments on the size of the portions are right on. (If you're a party of more than one, share a main course and don't whine as some reviewers have done about paying a modest plate charge, since the serving sizes are already 2-for-the-price-of-1.
These folks know how to COOK! I ordered the veal saltimbocca ... three perfectly done and tender veal medallions spaced out on a big silver platter, topped by baked spinach, mozarella (which they apparently make there at the restaurant) and a sublime tomato based sauce, with wine-mushroom-garlic-olive and many other unknown subtle spicing ingredients. Superb! No room for desert and I didn't have an appetizer.
The way I'd describe the decor is with a supposition about how it evolved ... a great Italian cook says to his/her spouse, let's open a restaurant, so they enlist some friends and relatives to be waiters, each of whom brings their own peculiar personality to the job, they all take some decorations, tablecloths, photos, geegaws off their walls, they gin up a simple limited menu of the thinks they know they can cook better than anybody else, they decorate their restaurant on opening day, add a bit to it over the years. I think it's nice and personal ... exactly the opposite of the million dollar bling so many would be restaurateurs substitute for good food. My waitress told me, "we are really great with fish, and we usually have a fish special to die for, but the owner went to the market today and wasn't happy with the fish, so we're not having fish today." Yes!!!
PS: I thought the prices were eminently reasonable for food of this quality.
Bottom line for this reviewer: Mama Cucina (that's CUCINA, y'all) equals great Italian cooking in Richmond.

“Big plates/big flavor”
Reviewed March 25, 2012

Great little place to grab a huge Italian meal. Everything is fresh and made to order. Service still is in the vain of the "no coke/pepsi" from the old SNL skit but the food will make it worth the visit.
