“It could be great, but for S__L__O__W wireless internet”
Reviewed August 28, 2012

I am a frequent business traveler to Richmond and stay at this hotel all the time because it is (1) clean; (2) well appointed for a business traveler, (3) convenient to Richmond, even if it's a bit of a drive to get downtown ... rush hours are manageable here, and mainly, (4) aggressive about accepting a low Priceline bid.
I would give this hotel five stars easy but for one thing ... their wireless internet service (which works just fine if you're here on a Sunday night) is incredibly SLOW during the week after a bunch of guests check in. Their service must be a basic home network package, divided by about 100 rooms, all of whom must be streaming Netflix, Hulu, or porno.
I've complained about it four times, and each time the desk clerk says (is trained to say) "Oh, we know about it and we have our technical people working on it."
But ... It ... Never ... Gets .... FIxed! Big :-(

I guess you get what you pay for, but owners/managers .... why don't you take care of this? It's a cheap and easy fix.

The website and amenities, along with the Hyatt name, made me certain we would enjoy this hotel. Unfortunately, despite modern updates, the rooms not only show their age, but the entire place seems a bit shabby and the cleanliness leaves much to be desired. If I hadn't just traveled 17 hours with my young daughter, I would have turned around and checked right out. Tiny bathrooms, as others have mentioned. Do not recommend - there are plenty of properties in the area.

The Hyatt Place brand has become one of our favorite hotels to stay in. On the outside this facility seemed to match what we've become accustomed to at a Hyatt Place. And while the staff was friendly and professional, there were several security issues that left us very concerned. First, the security latch on inside of our door looked had been broken off and left unfixed. Second, the ground floor side doors to the hotel were left unlocked after dark allowing people without hotel keys access to the buildings first floor. Worst yet, I found a stairwell exit propped open with a garbage can on back side of the hotel providing access to anyone to every floor of the hotel. There are plenty of other hotels in this general area that I would suggest looking into.

Thoroughly enjoyed my stay...my room
Wasnt ready when I checked in but with tr recent power outage I understood. My front desk clerk, Angela was fabulous. She made sure my wait was comfortable and apologized perfusiouly about the hold up...I like the set up of the room however the bathroom was very small.. Your knees almost touched the wall & the tight confinement made it hard to maneuver in tr bathroom... Other than that I was pleased...

I booked two room's last week for two nights and had no problem with the room. A large comfortable, only complaint is the bathroom is very small. The staff is very friendly and helpful. The breakfast was very good. I stopped at the bar for a beer each night and was met by friendly staff. Things were not over priced as other hotel bars. This past February I booked a night at the Hyatt Place near Houston airport. My flight was diverted and I spent the night in Mexico City. I attempted to cancel my reservation an hour after the deadline but was unable to until I spoke to the GM of the hotel. I attempted to contact her the following Monday, but only was able to leave message on voice mail. After three attempts I contact the main office and never heard back from them an answer. So I was glad to see that at least somewhere in the Hyatt Place world there are good managers, but not in Houston TX.

This hotel is showing its age. The rooms are ok and clean, but definitely getting tired. In my stays here I have encountered a room missing a bedside phone (there was one on the desk), a room where the outlet by the desk didn't work, and a room where the refrigerator was so noisy that I actually pulled it out of the cubby to unplug it so I could sleep.

The staff is variable...some are very responsive, others you feel at times you are an inconvenience to them.

So, while a good price and not bad, also not great.

Definitely not up to the same level I have had at other Hyatt Place locations.

I’ve stayed at the Hyatt Place several times over the past few years and am just back from another stay:

The Good:
*Large, suite-like rooms with separate living space, (pull-out couch, frig, etc). Great for entertainment and traveling with kids)
* Huge flat panel TV with good assortment of HD networks
*Located in nice commercial neighborhood, with good proximity to shopping, restaurants, Short Pump Mall area, etc.

The Bad:
*The common areas are starting to show their age (older AmeriSuites conversion)
*No guest laundry on site
*Complimentary continental breakfast is sub par. Management feedback reports that an overhaul is on tap that will freshen up the morning offerings. Some hot options are definitely needed (waffles, microwaveable egg sandwiches, fresh cinnamon rolls, etc). Also, the hotel needs to invest in a refrigerator in the breakfast area to keep cold things cold, (yogurt, milk, juice, etc). Setting a pitcher of milk on a frost plate doesn’t cut it. Also, eating warm yogurt is not very appetizing.
*Room AC unit is very noisy and the condenser cycles on an off continually to maintain room temperature. It was generally in the 60’s outside during my visit, yet AC was needed in my room to maintain a comfortable room temperature of 72. Also, the unit sits adjacent to the bed resulting in a very drafty situation. As a result, the noise and blowing air is not conducive to a restful night’s sleep.
*I found a couple of the desk clerks on staff to be a little stiff and robotic and generally void of warmth, smiles and personality. The staff did little to make a guest feel welcomed. There was no “we’re glad you’re here” attitude.

Bottom line…The Hyatt Place is fine for an abbreviated stay where you can secure a “special” rate, but newer and nicer options are available in the region for those that are paying the retail price. While I certainly don’t dislike the place, I’ll opt for a new destination the next time my travels have me in the area. I’d give the Hyatt Place an overall grade of B-.
