Comfortable seats, light snacks sold, started on time/ended on time. Professional "mountain music" venue. Loved it all ($5/perso MOST reasonable).

“Theaters, the way the used to look”
Reviewed September 11, 2012

If you want to see what small town theaters looked like 50 or 60 years ago, then the Rex Theater in downtown Galax is just the place. It isn't fancy. It isn't perfectly restored. Some of the paint is peeling on the ceiling and the seats are a little worn. But, it is comfortable and authentic. We were their for a local theater production. The theater is also used for bluegrass music performances on Friday nights. Pick your favorite entertainment, and enjoy the 1950s setting.

“Don't miss the live radio show Fridays!”
Reviewed July 31, 2012

This classic old movie theater is now a venue for traditional music. On Friday nights, there is a live radio show broadcast from here on Classic Country 98.1 FM. An online schedule will give you some idea of who will play, but don't be concerned if it's a band you haven't heard of -- it's all good music. Some Saturday nights there is live music for dancing, but flatfoot dancers are active at all shows. Sometimes there is no charge, but when there is it's usually $5. Performers often hang around the lobby to sell CDs after the show. There is a refreshment counter that raises funds for the theater. Bathrooms are upstairs, with no elevator.

“Wonderful Small Town American Experience”
Reviewed June 22, 2012

I'm not very knowledgeable about bluegrass music, but I do know I like music when my toes can't stop tapping. This place is a treasure. Beautiful theater with wonderful acoustics, and the band was great - even had a little boy playing bass and singing. The volunteers at the theater, and the people in general were so gracious and welcoming. And all for a donation. You can't even come close to this in NYS. Hope it goes on forever.
