“Great Group Getaway”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 8, 2005

We stayed at this B&B over a beautiful May weekend. It was an easy commute from DC, and we had the whole B&B rented out. There are now new innkeepers who just took over that week, Tom and his wife. They are wonderfully enthusiastic and thoughtful amenities include homemade mints at night, delicious cookies and Sherry by the fireplace, a wonderfully stocked open Irish bar which the men enjoyed thoroughly each night with their poker games, and lovely red carnations for the ladies at checkout. Breakfast on both mornings included delightful chocolate chip scones or blueberry scones with a scrumptious orange glaze, a full assortment of continental breakfast items, and the main breakfast was eggs benedict on one morning, apple fritter on croissant with sausage on Sunday (yum!). We hope the innkeepers don't burn themselves out. The whirlpool tubs in nearly every room where a delight. We had one couple more than rooms, so we shared a tower suite, the Plum cottage, with another couple. The bed and pullout in that cottage could both use an upgrade or a foam or feather topper, but I believe everyone else slept fairly well. FUN!

We were touring Virginia and stopped in Front Royal, asked for the best accommmodation at the tourist office and we were directed to Killahevlin. What a find. We stayed in the Plum Cottage Suite and it was wonderful. The best New England furnishing, whirlpool tub, even the soap was top quality, verandah with lovely views. Breakfast was great. For dinner we had a mexican takeaway delivered and had it in the grounds. Susan O'Kelly was helpful, friendly - everything you would want in a host. The little touches added so much e.g when we arrived late afternoon she showed us into the bar, put on some popcorn for the kids (teenagers) and we just relaxed. Rooms were serviced whilst we had our breakfast so as not to inconvenience us. In the evening people drifted into the Irish bar (completely free) and we all talked about what we had seen locally. we ended up staying for an extra couple of days just because of the quality of Killahevlin.

I stayed at the Killehevlin manor house while on business near Front Royal, Va. The innkeepers were extremely friendly and knowledgable about the town and surrounding area.
My room was mid-sized, but very comfortable with a Victorian bed and more than adequate bathroom space. The view of the Blue Ridge Mountains was incredible from the upstairs bedrooms, especially at dusk and dawn. There was an outbuilding that has more fancy rooms, but I opted to stay in the main house. The house was undergoing some repair work, as I would expect any 100-year-old country house would need. The owners were apologetic but I wouldn't have noticed had they not pointed it out.
My favorite part of the Killehevlin is a quaint Irish bar on the main floor. The bar reminds me of pubs I've visited in Ireland with quiet little nooks to sit and enjoy a pint in privacy. Since the innkeepers did not have a liquor license to sell victuals, the beer was "on the house." You can't beat that!
The Victorian house sits high up on a hill, away from the highway noise and allows for a good nights sleep.
The breakfast was a country feast with a light omlette, fruit, danish and excellent coffee.
I would highly recommend this B&B to anyone and I would stay there again and again.
