“The best filet mignon in Front Royal. No, In Virginia. Possibly in the U.S.”
Reviewed March 10, 2009

The Jamaican "flavor" of Soul Mountain is not exactly what you'd expect in the heart of historic Old Town Front Royal (whose claim to fame is the entrance to Skyline Drive, and touts itself as the "Canoe Capital" of the world). Located in a former German eatery, the restaurant recently underwent a warm and inviting makeover, but who's looking at the walls when there are such delightful dishes put in front of you? Everything is delicious, from the little Johnny Cake muffins served before the meal, all the way through to dessert (the creme brulee is excellent). My favorite entree is the filet mignon, which is served with spinach and risotto and is well worth the price. I've eaten in many very restaurants all over the U. S. and I cannot think of any filet mignon I've ever had that compared.

“Only Get's Better With Each Visit”
Reviewed October 17, 2008

The hubby and I first visited when they opened and sampled a variety of dishes. We found the taste, portions and quality to be equal to the "Island Style" flavor we prefer. No complaints here! We also had lunch at the second location, which is more a take out venue but again, no complaints and a delicious meal. The prices are reasonable and the seafood dishes are a welcome, unexpected treat in the heart of "red meat country".

“Love the Jerk Chicken!”
Reviewed July 7, 2008

We had read about Soul Mountain when it first opened, and tried it -- it was wonderful. Tried it again about a month later, and it had dropped off considerably, and it appeared that they were having trouble keeping good help. Wanted to try it again after seeing the wildly disparate reviews here, so went Saturday nite. Had reservation, but didn't need, as about half full. Waitress was quite good, though not terribly friendly. Had what we had the first time we went, which was the jerk chicken with coconut rice--it was a bit different than the previous time over a year ago--more spicy and on a plate rather than in a bowl, but the quality was as good as the first time. Highly recommend that--they also have curries and crabcakes and the like and had two specials the nite we were there--4 cheese ravioli and jerk pork chops. Would not call this place soul food, but more a combination of Jamaican and Creole. The complimentary corn muffins are very good as well. They have a selection of wine and beer (no draft when we were there but supposedly a short term problem), and also specialize in martinis. Recommended highly--the prices are fine--I think the jerk chicken was $11.95.

“great place to bring guests”
Reviewed June 30, 2008

I live in Linden and have frequented Soul Mountain on several occasions. It is a quaint joint that makes you feel as if you belong. We often bring our out of town guests there for a meal with great reviews of the food. Soul Mountain adds an interesting feel to Front Royal. Just wish they'd expand their bar selection--Wild Turkey perhaps?>

“the gem of front royal!!!”
Reviewed June 15, 2008

This restaurant combines an upscale feel with a "at home" country atmosphere. The food is amazing, so many different tastes. The music is great and the decor is a "world beat" genre. I really like the Soul Mountain and plan to return to try their famous filet mignon w/ risotto.
The price was average. Definitely below most nicer restaurants. I guess its pricey for front royal, but you get what you pay for and their food is definitely quality.
Service was fantastic and he helped us pair our wine and never left the glass empty!!!
