“Lovely Bed and Breakfast”
Reviewed October 10, 2013

What a treat to stay at The Inn on the Avenues! Janie and Ann are delightful hosts and a wealth of local information. The room we stayed in was lovely - clean, tidy, comfortable. The breakfast was delicious, and they accommodate the guests by adjusting the time to fit the schedules of the guests. The common areas of the home are very comfortable and inviting. There was coffee/tea/cookies available 24/7. The location is within walking distance of the college and downtown amenities; restaurants, shopping, site seeing. Although we were on a Civil War battlefield tour, and were unable to take the time to investigate, they have a nice bike trail (rails to trails) that has a trail head in the downtown area. If you are planning on biking, visiting battlefields, or visiting a student in either of the local colleges, I would highly recommend this bed and breakfast for a comfortable, affordable stay.

Room Tip: We were very happy with the green "hunting" themed room! Very comfortable bed!

In the fall of 2011 our son was admitted to Hampden-Sydney College. We had not seen the campus so we made an impromptu visit. After the tour of this beautiful and historic school we asked where we should stay for the evening. The admissions director suggested The Inn on the Avenues and we were not disappointed. It is a lovely bed and breakfast. The rooms are very comfortable and the amenities are endless. Proprietors Ann and Janie are a wonderful mother daughter team. The Inn is conveniently located in the heart of Farmville within close proximity to restaurants, shopping, Longwood University, Hampden-Sydney College and hiking and biking trails. Our son is now a sophomore at HSC and we always return to Inn on the Avenues when we visit.

We were staying in Farmville for an anniversary getaway and some Green Front Furniture shopping. We stayed at the Inn on the Avenues, as the Hampton Inn, our original choice, was fully booked, and we're glad it was! This was a great opportunity for us to experience a bed & breakfast (my husband's first). The mother-daughter proprietors, Ann and Janie, were gracious hosts, full of helpful suggestions on where to eat and what to visit (don't miss the Fishin' Pig restaurant!), as well as the unique history of the town and area. The house was exceptionally clean and quiet. The breakfasts were gourmet, the room was well appointed (comfy beds & pillows, lots of towels, complimentary water & snacks, etc.), and the location was great for walking. We were the only guests for the weekend, so we had the nice opportunity to see all of the bedrooms. (The Hunt room had our favorite style/decor, but the spacious bath in the Garden room - as well as the fact it didn't share a wall with any other bedrooms - won us over.) We enjoyed wine and cheese with the hosts in the parlor on Saturday evening, and we indulged in books and magazines available around the house. And, of course, Cotton (the gentleman of the house - the dog) made us feel right at home. Thank you to Ann & Janie for a delightful stay!

Room Tip: Garden room is the most spacious, with an immense bath with clawfoot tub. It does not share a wall...

My husband and I stayed at the Inn on the Avenues because we were in town for business, we are ready to go back for a mini-vacation. Ann and Janie (mother-daughter proprietors) have done an exceptional job making sure that guests are comfortable and have everything they need. Each room is nicely appointed and has a private bath. They keep snacks and cold drinks upstairs for guests to enjoy anytime. I could write ten lines about the amazing breakfasts! The fruit, granola and yogurt parfaits are beautiful and delicious. We also had a feta, caper and tomato fritata with hasbrowns, sausage and fresh mango on the side. Janie and Ann spoiled us all! Cotton-the house dog- is a perfect southern gentleman. He greets you politely, does not come into your room, and likes to sit on the lovely front porch with you. The Inn on the Avenues is the perfect place to stay whether you are there for work, visiting colleges, shopping at Greenfront or enjoying the river and trails. We can't wait to get back.

Stayed here for the first time while in town for business. I am tired of the chain hotels.

Everything I needed was here. wifi, electrical outlets, hangers, private bath, complimentary water, etc. You name it they had it. The property is located on a quiet street. I enjoyed the front porch in the evening and the early morning. Nicely appointed. Janie and Ann were very nice and friendly. Breakfast was wonderful. They were very accommodating with my diet needs. There is no comparison with the chain hotel in town.

This will be my stop when in the area for future business.

I strongly recommend The Inn on the Avenues.

My parents and I traveled to Farmville, VA to shop at the Green Front furniture complex. Our 2-night stay at the Inn on the Avenues was delightful. Janie, Ann and Cotton (the lovely English setter) greeted us at the door upon our arrival. The home is lovely with nice furnishings. Although we turned down afternoon snacks (we ate late lunches both days), we enjoyed fresh-baked cookies and complimentary sodas and snacks during the late evenings. This is a very clean B&B with attention paid to detail in ensuring the comfort of the traveler. We had the BEST breakfast I have ever had at a B&B. Janie and Ann are terrific cooks and the food was plentiful (and the reason we had late lunches!). The cost was very reasonable for the service and accommodations. We highly recommend this B&B! Thanks, Janie and Ann!

Room Tip: There are only 3 and all 3 were nice. The Hunt Room is cosy. The other 2 rooms very sunny

We stayed here August 2012 for a weekend away from our boys. It was an absolute delight. We enjoyed Janie and Ann and think about our time with them often. The breakfasts were the nicest I have ever had. (Don't tell anyone in my family though!) Almost every Saturday morning I think about their breakfast as I trudge downstairs to make my pancakes from a box mix. Farmville is a cute little town and we explored it, but found ourselves wanting to just relax and chill at the Inn. Our room was quiet and so comfortable. One of our favorite memories is sitting on the porch having wine, cheese, and crackers with our hosts. We'll go back, not for the town of Farmville, but for this wonderful B&B. Maybe we can convince our 5 and 7 year olds to attend school here. Can we book for graduation weekend 2028 yet?

Room Tip: Book Early for move-in/move out, graduation, and parent's weekends for the local colleges.
