We visited the Woodlands Restaurant located off Highway 29 in Fairfax for a Sunday buffet and were overwhelmed by the variety of foods that are available as well as the value for money!
The ambiance of the restaurant is not conducive to fine dining or subdued conversations - at least at the Sunday buffet. But the food is great and we went for the food, and only the food.
There has been a change in management and the cook - with exceedingly good results. The food is all vegetarian, cooked in the South Indian style. There is a range of spicy hot dishes and other dishes that are milder to cater to a range of palates. The spiciness of the hot items, however, does not approach the intense killer extremes of Chettinad food or Andhra food.
There are three or more types of dessert to finish off the meal. Our favorites were the quintessential South Indian hits - vadas - deep fried lentil and rice flour cakes dunked in steaming sambhar with a side of chutney, dosas freshly made and served at your table with a filling of potato and onion curry inside, and steaming idlis - steamed cakes of rice and lentils also followed up with sambhar and chutney.
At around twelve bucks for the buffet, the meal is a great value for money. With the variety and range of dishes there is something for everyone. The restaurant is family friendly and the tables generally seat four though the restaurant will group tables together for large parties. There is plenty of parking in the lot in front of the restaurant. The Sunday buffet opens at 11:00 AM and is conducive to brunching after sleeping in.
Something tells me we will be going there for more Sunday brunches in the future - at future peril to our waistlines but with the Woodlands - its tasty food that will not break the bank.
