When a restaurant charges you for Japanese tea, probability is that it is not a Japanese restaurant. This place is called Izakaya meaning Japan pub. They do offer sushi but it is for other Japanese dishes, you may want to visit. The best value for money during lunch is selection of about four different Bento Boxes. These are small dishes within a box including sushi. Majority of customers here seem to be Asian so it's pretty authentic. Being summer, we had eel over rice. Since eels are getting scarce around the world because of demand, eels didn't cover all the part of rice which should but nevertheless, we enjoyed them. We also had red bean ice cream over sweet red beans.

I found this little shoebox of a place by accident and have been coming regularly ever since. The chirashi sushi is great and I'm addicted to the udon noodle soup

Very unprofessional! You can order something but what you get... well... might be very different! They were out of rice, they claimed!! Do not make the mistake of ordering a take out... you might end up having much less food than you ordered!

Many Japanese restaurants are actually run by Chinese or Korean staff. Not Blue Ocean! They have authentic Japanese staff who will speak Japanese with guests if you want to practice your Japanese language skills. The food (and I ordered braised eel because it was July - eel is traditional to eat in July) was authentic and delicious. It is NOT some contemporary Asian fusion cuisine place - it is real normal Japanese food, and I lived in Japan for 12 years since the age of 19, so I can vouch for it.
My family arrives in town at the end of August - I will definitely take them to Blue Ocean soon!

My wife and I and our daughters lived in Japan for years--this is as authentic as you can get in DC area. Its not fancy, high-end Japanese, no tatami mats or mincing waitresses--but the sushi is extremely fresh, the miso is fantastic, so to the soba, udon, gyoza, and tempura (yakitori nothing to write home about, but hey, now you know). On any given night,80% of patrons are Japanese nationals (i.e. they are Japanese citizens, living in the US). Owners are Japanese. Sushi chefs are Japanese. Waitresses are Japanese. Nuf said. Enjoy
