“Good location”
Reviewed March 9, 2013

This is much simpler to get to than other venues such as the Kennedy Center. There is free parking in Lot K and a short walk to the theatre. It's a medium sized theatre. We sat in the balcony area, row FF on the side, and we could see very well with no obstructions. We saw a modern dance program here. The theatre was clean and comfortable. It was easy getting out of the parking lot afterwards. The ticket price range was $23, 38, 46. We paid $38 which seemed a little expensive for our program. There was a free discussion by the dance company owner/choreographer 45 minutes before the show which was interesting.

“Kennedy Center-quality programming without the crowds and traffic”
Reviewed December 9, 2012

The facility itself is nice enough, but nobody will mistake it for the Kennedy Center (or even Strathmore). The seats are comfortable, the sight-lines are good, and the acoustics are at least acceptable. The lobby itself is very comfortable and the access to the seats is good.

But the arena facility is definltely "no frills" -- and showing its age.

It's the programming that makes this a near-great facility. Unlike Kennedy Center, where you might still be in the parking garage an hour after the show closes, it's easy to get in and out of this facility on the GMU campus. And you can see the Mariinsky ballet and orchestra (nee Kirov), the leading Russian ballet companies; leading modern dance troupes such as Mark Morris, Martha Graham, etc. There are some compromises -- at Kennedy Center, the ballet is going to be dancing to the orchestra while at Mason they'll be dancing to a recording. But if the performance is what matters, you can see some excellent performances here.

The CFA also hosts a resident orchestra and opera company and is the venue for student performances. These represent a high quality but affordable entertainment option.

Even during the recession, when major donations fell way off, the quality of their programming stayed surprising strong. This is an outstanding performing arts facility.

A good am

“Great acoustics, comfortable seating but prices can be high”
Reviewed October 25, 2012

I understand the idea - it's a Kennedy Center in Fairfax, but for a venue sponsored by a college, there should be deeper discounts for alumni and a little better selection of artists. They often book strange dance companies and orchestra solo-ists but there's not often artists that attract the college community (which doesn't make sense, since it is ON campus) or the younger, more ecclectic, trendy set - they should offer violinists and fiddlers, pianists and folk bands, ballet and jazz, steppers and Irish dance. There really isn't much of a range at all. Perhaps they are catering to the "older" crowd, but there isn't even much here that baby boomers would consider a "can't miss." The building is GORGEOUS, so they should try and attract more of a contemporary crowd that is willing to buy more tickets and come more often, versus those who are simply trying to support the arts.
