I actually went there with on a date with a special someone before he deployed to Iraq in 2009. We were originally seated in the dining room, but were the only ones there. We were invited to come back to the bar area which was still nice. We were introduced to all the regulars at the bar and given a nice table away from the bar. When they learned he was deploying in a couple of weeks, we were treated royally. The food was good and the service friendly. Our waitress was very outgoing and quirky, which added to the night in a good way. There isn't a lot of restaurants in Emporia, and you'll be disappointed if you're expecting a big-city 5-star restaurant, but I will go there again when I have the opportunity. I wanted to submit this review, even though it's late, because I have such warm memories of the people there and the good food that evening.

Have had a couple of large parties, atmosphere is quiet, so its easy for large groups to converse. Food was good. Would go back.

Only the flavorful, albeit two grades overdone prime rib, and a friendly waiter save this terrible place from a zero rating.

Positive:

- The beef had flavor and the waiter did his best.
- The only alternatives were Applebee's or Cracker Barrel.

Negative:

- "Rare" means medium-well. The only other diner in the place complained about it, but we figured it would only be worse if we sent it back.
- The wine literally was undrinkable. At least they took it off the bill.
- The "butter" proudly proclaimed itself 52% vegetable oil, the rest was water and chemical sludge.
- Bottom shelf Scotch was $9.
- Smoke from the bar entered the dining room.

Forget the fast food restaurants off of 95 or the chains such as Applebee's and Cracker
Barrel. For an excellent dining experience in Emporia go an extra mile down Main Street and visit the Squire House. It is a beautiful old home that was once a private residence, and it's absolutely charming. The rooms are beautifully decorated, and each one has a cozy fireplace. Delicious hush puppies are immediately brought to the table, and they are just the start of a wonderful meal. We have eaten there quite a few times and never had a bad experience. The steaks are cooked to perfection, the crab cakes are out of this world, and the prime rib is outstanding. The service is always excellent as well. On our latest visit we were fortunate enough to be served by a young man named Kendall who went out of his way to make sure that everything was to our satisfaction. All in all, the Squire House is the total package - wonderful atmosphere, delicious food, and excellent service. We will definitely stop there again when we're in Emporia!

We stop in Emporia each year on our way to Myrtle Beach. Eating choices for dinner are Applebees or Cracker Barrel. Our hotel suggested the Squire House. It's in an old mansion with several small dining rooms. Very cosy and inviting. Enormous Christmas tree is in the foyer year round. Felt like we were dining in historic Savannah. They were not very busy this Saturday night so we enjoyed a quiet dinner for two. Service was great. We each order a cocktail (they have a lounge in the rear) and Prime rib. The meal was excellent. This is not a five star restaurant like you'd find in the big city but for one night in Emporia, VA it was well worth the money.
